notation for hits HARDBALL the game of baseball played with a hard, three-inch diameter ball, as opposed to softball. HB Hit Batter HBP Hit by Pitch, Hit by Pitcher
Heat or Hit A ball batted into fair territory which allows the batter to reach base safely without the aid of an error. HIT AND RUN Play-action situation in which the batter must swing at the pitch while the base runner attempts to steal the base. Hit Batter A batter hit by a pitch. hit behind the runner (of a batter) to hit the ball to the right side when a base runner is advancing from first base so the ball goes to the right of the runner Hit by Pitch/Pitcher Struck by a pitched ball while within the batter's box. When a batter is struck by a pitch while standing in the batter's box. The batter is awarded first base and not credited with an at-bat. However, if the batter leans in toward the plate and is struck by a pitch that would have been a strike in the umpire's judgment or swings at a pitch that hits him or her, the pitch is called a strike and the batter is not awarded first base. Hitch A hitch is a cocking motion that occurs when players move their hands down and up, instead of keeping them still and moving them straight out toward the ball. A hitch also takes time and causes a player to swing late at a fastball. Batters must keep their hands still and move them outward only with the swing, directly at the ball.
Hitter's Count Refers to a situation where a batter can expect to get a good pitch to hit because the pitcher is behind in the count and needs to throw a strike. Examples of hitter's counts are 2-0, 3-0, 3-1. Often times, a hitter will receive a fastball in a situation where there is a hitter's count because it is the easiest pitch for most pitchers to put in the strike zone. Thus, a hitter's count is often referred to as a fastball count.
Home base is last of the four points on the baseball diamond that a player must touch in order to score. The term first base also applies to the rubber slab that marks this point. Home base is a five-sided beveled slab that measures 17 inches by 17 inches, with two of the corners cut off so that the two parallel sides are 8.5 inches long and the two sides that come together to make a point are 12 inches long. Shaped like a house.
