 L    Scorer's notation for Line Drive,
         Loss, Losing Pitcher 

Lead-Off   when a runner steps off of  his/her base making a small advance towards the next base before the pitch in order to steal or have an advantage start run from a hit ball by the batter.
Be careful, runner can be picked off.

Lead-Off Batter
1. The first batter in the batting order.
2. The player who bats first in any inning.

The LEAGUE is a group of teams who play each other in a pre-arranged schedule under the rules for the league championship.


League Age The age attained by a participant as of July 31 during the year in question. This is the factor used by Little League Baseball in determining the age bracket in which the child will be placed during that season. The date was determined as a result of an agreement with other youth baseball and softball organizations.

Left on Base  The number of runners on base at the time a third out in a half-inning is made.

Left Field   The third of the outfield that is to the left, looking from home plate.  The position played by the left fielder.

Left Fielder   The player who defends left field.

LEGAL (Or LEGALLY) is in accordance with the Official Little League Rules.

Legally Caught  There are several conditions under which a pitch is legally caught:

  • The catcher catches the pitch in his glove before the ball touches the ground

  • The catcher smothers the ball against his body after it has first struck his hand or glove
  • A foul tip glances off the catcher's glove and is then caught by the catcher using both hands against his body.

A pitch is not legally caught if the ball gets stuck in the catcher's clothing or paraphernalia or if the pitch touches the umpire before the catcher catches it on the rebound.

LHB   Left-handed Batter 

LHP   Left-handed Pitcher 

Line Drive  A batted ball that has a trajectory that closely parallels and then moves toward the ground.
a batted ball that goes sharp and direct from the bat to a fielder without touching the ground.

LINE-UP   A team’s batting order and fielding positions.

The nine players starting the game for a baseball team. The order and positioning of the players is set before the game, usually by the head coach or manager. Each position is represented by a number for scorekeeping purposes. A player substituting or pinch hitting for a starting player must hit in that starting player's batting order position, unless substituted via a double switch.

LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL  or  LITTLE LEAGUE
Acceptable on first reference to the organization named below. Also used to identify the regular season division for participants age 9-12 (league age).

baseball played in a league consisting of young players 8 to 12 years of age, usually sponsored by a private organization or city recreation department

LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL, INCORPORATED
The official title of the organization, founded in 1939 by Carl Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It is now the largest youth sports program in the world, providing baseball and softball programs to about 3 million participants ages 5-18 on 200,000 teams in more than 90 countries
(1998 estimate)


LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL International Board of Directors
Board in whom is placed the responsibility for the management of the property and affairs of  Little League Baseball, Incorporated. Five members of the board are nominated at the Little League Baseball International congress from among district administers.

LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL International Congress  A congress of Little League Baseball district administers held once every three years. Part of the agenda at each congress is to review any possible changes in rules and regulations of Little League, and to make recommendation for changes to Little League Baseball International Board of Directors. Another part of the agenda is to nominate for election five new members, from among district administrators, to the Little League Baseball International Board of Directors.

LITTLE LEAGUE FOUNDATION  A charitable, non-profit organization with the IRS as a tax-exempt residuary of funds, real or personal; and of other interests donated by gift, demise bequest or other transfer, to be used for the welfare and development of the children of Little League.

LIVE BALL   a ball which is in play.

LO   Left On 

LOB  Abbreviation for "Left on Base" Simply means that the batter safely reached a base but did not score.


LOCAL LEAGUE  The administrative organization, participants, managers, coaches, umpires and all volunteers making up a chartered Little League program.


LOCAL RULES (or ground rules, or bylaws) Those rules enacted annually by a local league referring to daily operations (examples: 10 run-rule and tournament team selection method) not covered in the Official Regulations and Playing Rules and the local league's constitution.

Losing Pitcher   The pitcher who is responsible for giving up the run that allows the opposing team to win the game.

Loss   A defeat.  The statistic credited to a losing pitcher.
