W Walk, Win, Winning Pitcher Walk An award of first base to a batter who has received four pitches outside the strike zone without swinging at them. All forced runners advance one base. The same as a "base on balls." Wheelhouse A hitter's power zone. Whiff A strike out. WIFFLE BALL (Trademark) a hollow plastic ball with holes. Win A victory. A statistic credited to the winning pitcher. Wild Card A team that has been given a play-off spot because it has the best record among the teams that have not won a division. Wild Pitch A pitch that is delivered in such a manner that the catcher cannot catch it with ordinary effort. Windup Position The wind-up position is one of the two legal pitching positions. The other is the set position. The windup position is described by the Major League Baseball rules as follows: "The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, his entire pivot foot on, or in front of and touching and not off the end of the pitcher's plate, and the other foot free. From this position any natural movement associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without interruption or alteration. He shall not raise either foot from the ground, except that in his actual delivery of the ball to the batter, he may take one step backward, and one step forward with his free foot."
Winning Pitcher The player on the winning team who was the pitcher when the winning run is scored. WP Wild Pitch, Winning Pitcher
