The most interesting feature about Fruits Basket is the detailed thought put into making the characters. The characters' emotions and hardships mirror those of people in the real world. The amazing thing is that they aren't flat characters like most anime or most animated shows, but are deep and complex. They have reasons why they act the way they do, and this is one of the main themes of Fruits Basket. To overlook one's faults and accept yourself. The characters in Fruits Basket, particularly the Sohma clan often have trouble accepting themselves and hate themselves. I actually know people like Tohru who are always nice, mysterious people who avoid others like Yuki, and people who have a good heart but get angery easily like Kyo.
