Martin J Wager, Jr., grew up mostly on the family farm in Waterford, Michigan, but spent a year going to school in Des Plaines, Illinois. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration, Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation from Michigan State University in 1953. He served two years as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force, stationed in New York City and Boston, 1953 to 1955, and spent the four years following his military service working for Standard and Cities Service oil companies. In 1963, he earned a Master of Divinity at Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago, Illinois, Rock Island Illinois campus. He served as an associate minister at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fresno, California, 1963-1966; minister at Advent Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights, California, 1966-1976; and minister at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Monterey, California, 1976-1981. After selling insurance for Lutheran Brotherhood for seven years, he returned to the ministry for Lutheran Church of the Cross in Sacramento.
