In September 1973, Western
Suffolk BOCES (then known as BOCES III) opened an innovative new school
facility called the James E. Allen Learning Center. This facility had an
unusual design consisting of hexagonal shaped classrooms that were arranged
in the manner of flower clusters. Inside these unusually shaped classrooms,
however, were classes devoted to teaching academic and living skills to the
learning disabled and emotionally disturbed.
