About Animal Medicine |
I have read and heard any number of explanations or definitions as to what animal "medicine" is. The effect these written and verbal orations had (and still have) on me, personally, is that feeling we've all had of "Ah-HAH! I knew it, I just knew it already!" Having something put into words that I somehow/somewhat already knew something about intuitively, came as some sort of needed confirmation to me. . .or as a relief to me. . . or something. Or as that very-very welcome feeling of getting "fine-tuned" on something I already just "knew-in-my-knower" about (so-to-speak), but not as clearly so as before. Some of you will immediately know exactly what I'm talking about. But if you have absolutely no idea of what I'm talking about, don't worry about that, don't let my blathering confuse you. Here's some excerpts from a great book (referenced further below) that might be helpful to you: Sacred Teaches Say ". . .To understand the concept of medicine in the Native American way, one must redefine 'medicine.' The medicine referred to . . . is anything that improve one's connection . . . to all life. This would include the healing of body, mind, and of spirit. This medicine is also anything which brings personal power, strength, and understanding. It is the constant living of life in a way that brings healing to the Earth Mother and to all of our associates, family, friends, and fellow creatures. Native American medicine is an all encompassing 'way of life,' for it involves walking on the Earth Mother in perfect harmony with the Universe. . . Our fellow creatures, the animals, exhibit habit patterns that will relay these messages of healing to anyone astute enough to observe their lessons on how to live. The precious gifts of true medicine are free. . . . When you call upon the power of an animal, you are asking to be drawn into complete harmony with the strength of that creature's essence. . . .In learning to call on the medicine of any person, creature, or natural force, one must maintain an attitude of reverence and be willing to accept assistance. . . ." Approaches From that same book, I have created the chart below, that lists some animals and what their medicines are. Below the chart is a table-of-links leading to short summaries about each of the the animal medicines. (By "short summaries," I mean that the information on each of the medicines has been reduced from at least 2 full pages each, of the book, to approximately two paragraphs each, for these webpages. These summaries do give you the general "drift" of things, but in all honesty, not a full concept, like the book does.) You can use this material in any number of ways: ~ Anytime an animal physically or visually presents itself to you in some unusual way, a way that stands out to you and truly grabs your attention of it, the spirit of that animal is bringing you a message. ~ Anytime you dream of an animal, the spirit of that particular animal is bringing you a message. ~ If you have a specific area in your life needing a healing of some sort, scan the list of medicines to find which ones apply to your situation, then know that the spirits of the medicine-related animals will bring you messages. Your Quest for Balance Please REMEMBER: The chart and the summaries just barely scan the surface of all there is to be learned about these medicines. Please get books, surf the net for more info, obtain all the info you can about the physical and spiritual aspects of the animal or animals that already you feel are trying to help you, or that you are reaching out to for help. Study all the angles of what powers the animal represents - the positive angles and the negative angles. Within each summary, you will notice an area labeled "Contrary." What that signifies is a "special message" about that particular medicine for when it is a fact that there is an "imbalance" around you or within you concerning that medicine. Maybe the "imbalance" is not within YOU, but is within somebody in your life who's imbalance could effect you. This doesn't necessarily signify a negative aspect, just a "be aware" aspect. If the imbalance is indeed within your own self, work on getting it healed. You must be truthful with yourself when studying about how the medicines apply to your life. Be honest with yourself in determining what aspect of that medicine is "out of balance" in your life, whether it be physically, mentally, or spiritually. Work on being healed by putting those aspects of your life into balance and harmony within yourself. And never-never forget: "...maintain an attitude of reverence and be willing to accept assistance...." |
