Oscar Update
March 25, 2002
[ hpl ] reports:

No wins for Harry Potter! (I bet no one was expecting that.) I didn't think it was the greatest movie ever anyway. The make up was pretty good though. The score was dissapointing... effects were lacking... I wonder if I only liked it because of all of the hype and because it's about Harry Potter?

Haha, I was mostly sad for Moulin Rouge though. It only won one Oscar... for Art design or something. eh, well, waygd?

DAn Radcliffe did do some talking during the presentations...in his HP costumes. I think he was talking about that one guy from The Way We Were (with Barbara Streisand).

Movie Props... Big Money
March 20, 2002
[ ananova ] reports:

Props from some of the biggest movies are expected to raise more than £1 million at an auction starting today.

More than 1500 lots used in blockbusters like Titanic, Gladiator and the Harry Potter film will be sold.

The three day sale takes place at Sotheby's in London.

The auction also features props from the James Bond films Octopussy and You Only Live Twice.

Items for sale include a large globe featured in Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, a Venetian figure used in Billy Elliot, and a coffin complete with real skeleton used in the opening scenes of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The artefacts were from a business built up by the late Ken Paul, an antiques dealer who decided to loan out some of his items after a friend, art director Scott Simon, suggested the idea.

The first film he supplied from his base in Hampstead, north-west London was The Elusive Pimpernel, starring David Niven. He also supplied props for the first television dramas Robin Hood, William Tell and The Avengers.

Mr Paul's daughter Christine took over the business when her father died in 1989, but she has now decided to retire. She said: "Although we have decided to close the shop, the films that we have supplied with props will stand as a lasting legacy to the house of Ken Paul.

"Our hope is that all of these wonderful props will find equally good homes and that the sale itself will be a fitting tribute to my father."

Oscar-winning set designer Peter Young, who sourced pieces from Ken Paul's collection for films including Sleepy Hollow, The Mummy and Superman 4, said: "It's huge mix of objects, from the Oriental and African rooms to the arms, armour and medieval room under one roof, has saved time and effort on many a tight filming schedule."

Movie extras sworn to secrecy
March 12, 2002
[ ananova ] reports:

Fifty child extras taking part in the second Harry Potter film have been barred from talking about it to friends, family - and even their parents.

The youngsters have been forced to sign secrecy pacts forbidding them from discussing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with anyone.

They will be paid £35 a day when they start filming at Alnwick Castle, Northumberland on Monday.

A letter sent to each of the children's parents says: "Confidentiality agreements must be signed by everybody entering the studio.

"It is Warner Bros policy that every person working on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets does not disclose any information acquired during your visit to the location."

According to The Daily Express: , parents have been complaining about the strictness of the policy.

A spokeswoman for children's charity Kidscape added: "It isn't good to encourage children not to talk to their parents, that's how abusers work by installing fear."

Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets opens in November.

Fantasy films topping box office
March 12, 2002
[ ananova ] reports:

Cinema audiences in the UK have hit a 30-year high.

Moviegoers clocked up 141 million visits to cinemas during 2001, the largest number since 1972, the Office for National Statistics said today.

Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings are among the most successful films of all time just three months after their release.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone is only bettered by Titanic in the all-time box office top 10.

Cinemas have seen a major resurgence over the past few years as they recover from the impact of video on an already declining market.

The audience figures hit a low in 1984 but have improved almost every year since then.

They are four million up on 2000 admissions. The final quarter of 2001, when both Potter and Rings were released, saw the number of admissions increase by 17% compared with the same period a year earlier.

However, admissions are nowhere near the levels achieved in the early 1950s which were nearly 10 times greater.

The increased ownership of TV sets was partly to blame for the drop in attendance. The highest figure prior to 2001 was 157 million in 1972.
