The candles would burn down low. New
ones would replace the low candles. The children rushed the little tree. They pulled off toys and candy. "Read us a story" shouted the children. |
And old man sat down beneath the Fir Tree. The old man read the children the story of Humpty
Dumpty.
"Can't I be in this story?" thought the Fir Tree.
"Will I have nothing to do in it?" But the Fir Tree had been the amusement for the evening.
The Fir Tree looked forward to the next evening. He thought he would be decorated again. All night, he
kept thinking how splendid he would look the next night.
Early the next morning, the servants came in the room.
"Now, they will decorate me again" thought the Fir Tree. Instead they dragged the Fir Tree from the
room. They put him in a dark corner in a room upstairs.
