The tree told the mice the story of Humpty Dumpty. He

told the mice that Humpty Dumpty married a princess.

The Fir Tree thought of many pretty trees in the forest.

Maybe someday he would marry a princess.

On Sunday, many more mice came and even two big rats.

"Do you only have one story to tell?" asked the rats.

"I only know the Humpty Dumpty story" said the tree.

"Don't you know about bacon and other food in the storeroom?" asked the rats.

"No" said the Fir Tree.

"Then we would rather not listen to you" said the rats.

After that, the little mice and the rats stayed away from the Fir Tree. The Fir Tree became sad. It was

nice when the little mice were all around.

One morning, the servants came in and pulled the Fir Tree out of the room.

"Now they will put me outside and I will grow again" thought the tree. The tree's branches were all

yellowed with age. The servants dragged it in a corner. They put it with the nettles and weeds.
