  • About the Hoax Detective Newsletter

If you've been looking for a place to find out about urban legends, strange news stories, netlore, superstitions and folk wisdom, or if you've ever wondered about alligators in sewers, headlight flash gang initiations, HIV-loaded needles in theatre seats, business cards for a dying child, or $250 cookie recipes, the Hoax Detective online newsletter is for you.

The Hoax Detective online newsletter brings together some of the best and most reliable information sources on the internet into a single CENTRAL location where users can have quick, easy access to a wealth of information about e-mail rumors and warnings in order to determine their validity. Only the most reliable and credible sources have been used for this site with several of these sources being featured in news reports including CNN (Click here for CNN news article) as well as many major market newspaper and radio stations. Every story listed on this site has been personally researched by one or more of these sources and has been classified in a category identifying the status of the story such as True, Partially True, Hoax, Undetermined, Outdated, Disputed, Joke, Scam, etc.

Each issue of the Hoax Detective online newsletter will be packed full of information including:

    Hoaxes, E-Rumors & Urban Legends:
Each issue will report on newly reported hoaxes as well as highlight old hoaxes which have stood the test of time or have resurfaced in its original form or with some slight changes to "update" it. Stories covered may include computer virus warnings, missing children, sick and/or dying children as well as warnings about health problems caused by certain products, safety issues, e-mail petitions, promises of money or merchandise, and much, much more.

    Scam & Fraud Alerts:
This site also provides valuable information about known scams and fraud including credit card scams, tax scams, identity theft and more. Reports will cover e-mail scams, scams via regular mail, telephone and in-person as well as unethical business practices such as restaurants charging higher prices for certain days or hotels raising their prices when a high visiblity event comes to town.

This site is the result of many hours searching for information on hundreds of phony e-mail warnings, hoaxes, calls for help and e-mail scams which fill users' inboxes on a daily basis.
