I was asked to do it and I thought, 'oh sod it. Why not?' But I also said to the girls doing it, I said, 'If this was 1939 I hope you wouldn't be putting the same crap on because there had to be a war.'" - Ian McCulloch, Soundgenerator, May 14th, 2003. Coldplay's Chris Martin played piano for the last three songs, and dueted with McCulloch on "Walk on the Wild Side".

May 12th, 2003 Ian McCulloch Nottingham, England; Rescue Rooms
May 19th, 2003 Ian McCulloch Washington, DC, United States; 9:30 Club NOTES: "Whatever tension there was during the show centered on whether any 1980s Bunnymen classics would surface (only an acoustic 'Killing Moon' was featured), but as it turned out, it wasn't the spirit of Will Sergeant that hovered over the show, but that of Lou Reed, as McCulloch seemed most engaged on 'Walk on the Wild Side', 'Sweet Jane' and 'I'm Waiting for the Man'." -- Patrick Foster, The Washington Post
May 20th, 2003 Ian McCulloch Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; Theater of Living Arts

May 28th , 2003 Ian McCulloch Los Angeles, California, United States; Roxy NOTES: "Same setlist as most other shows
. First song, 'Playgrounds and City Parks', was horrible; 'Love in Veins' was mega. 'Nothing Lasts Forever' morphs into 'Walk on the Wild Side', 'Seven Seas' added, 'History Chimes' ended midway (again, just like Chicago). 'Lips Like Sugar' added 'only because it's LA' says Mac & was great until the croon session. 'Sweet Jane' stops abruptly midway and jumps into 'I'm Waiting For My Man'. No 'Stake Your Claim'. 'Candleland' was amazing, 'Lover, Lover, Lover' was just too good." - Seven Seas email list post

there is SO much to this festival, it's incredibly hard to put into words. Its feeling is unmatched by any festival, event or gig anywhere else in the world. As you walk through the gates you really do feel the weight peel off your shoulders
. This is why people go, year in year out, without even needing to look at the price or who is playing." - Seven Seas email list post, June 26th, 2003

Well, it was the best performance of Echo I saw. Mr. McCulloch was in great shape. He concentrated on singing instead of talking and moaning. The band played fantastic as well. Of course, all their classics were there ...." -- Suedeonline.com forum post, August 9th, 2003 July 12th , 2003 Echo and the Bunnymen County Kildare, Ireland; Witnness Festival NOTES: "Over at the Main Stage, Echo and the Bunnymen played a tight, tight set full of classics like 'The Killing Moon', 'The Cutter' and 'Back of Love', yet it was just too early to create the sense of occasion that their sheer class merited." -- oxygen.ie. In 2004, this annual event changed its name to the Oxegen Festival.
July 13th, 2003 Echo and the Bunnymen Balado, Scotland: T in the Park Festival NOTES: "With his smart blue blazer, tight jeans and sunglasses, [Ian McCulloch] might look like your Dad out for an afternoon stroll. But as 'Nothing Lasts Forever' morphs into 'Walk on the Wild Side', there's something timeless about the Bunnymen's music, even if no one other than Chris Martin admits to caring. Nice teeth, too." -- nme.com. McCulloch also joined Coldplay on stage for their rendition of "Lips Like Sugar".

. He played beautiful songs. A lot of work of the last album Slideling, which was sublime. The gig was, beside the fact that I didn't know every song, more than satisfying." - Rockmusicsite.be review [English translation] August 10th, 2003 Ian McCulloch Leicester, England; Summer Sundae Festival

'Crocodiles'
turned into a punked-up adrenaline roar, while 'Over the Wall' stretched out into a charging psychedelic guitar storm shuddering with apocalyptic yearnings." -- Annie Zaleski, Reuters. The sound check included "I'll Fly Tonight" and "The Game". Will Sergeant and Ian McCulloch also participated in a pre-show 'meet and greet' which involved drinks, pizza and autographs.
October 24th, 2003 Echo and the Bunnymen Asbury Park. New Jersey, United States; Stone Pony NOTES: "It was a Friday night and the bar never kicked anyone out till 2 a.m. when they closed! The band mingled and chatted with everyone. Besides the songs on the Boston setlist, they also played 'Heads Will Roll' and 'I'll Fly Tonight' that I can think of off the top of my head." - Seven Seas email list post

His voice was soaring, and hyper-expressive, especially during the Doors-esque 'Bedbugs and Ballyhoo', the booming 'The Cutter', a propulsive 'Killing Moon', and the galloping 'Back of Love'
." -- VirginmegaMagazine

November 14th, 2003 Echo and the Bunnymen Melbourne, Australia; Prince of Wales NOTES: "McCulloch, wearing dark glasses and looking fit, opened the show with 'Show of Strength' .... Highlights were 'Crocodiles'
. 'I'll Fly Tonight', the relentless 'Over The Wall', 'Lips Like Sugar' (one of their happier, poppier moments) and -- unquestionably the band's biggest hit -- the wonderfully anthemic 'The Cutter'. They returned for two encores (the first ending with a cheeky segue into Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side'), before ending with 'Heads Will Roll' and 'Ocean Rain'. They could probably have done a third encore, given the audience's delirium." -- Jo Roberts, theage.com.au

I know it's 'Barrowland', but 'Barrowlands' is the way we've always said it." -- Ian McCulloch, Glasgow Sunday Herald, November 23rd, 2003. "The sound and lights were great. On one song there was so much smoke that the Bunnymen started playing 'I'll Fly Tonight' for a few lines until someone (Will, I think) said 'It was supposed to be Zimbo'. Ian retorted, 'I couldn't see.'" - Seven Seas email list post
November 29th, 2003 Echo and the Bunnymen Liverpool, England; Royal Court Theatre Show of Strength Rescue Silver Seven Seas Rust Crocodiles Bedbugs and Ballyhoo Bring on the Dancing Horses The Back of Love The Killing Moon The Cutter I'll Fly Tonight All My Colours (Zimbo) Over the Wall Do It Clean Nothing Lasts Forever/Walk on the Wild Side Lips Like Sugar Heads Will Roll Ocean Rain NOTES: "The classic 'Killing Moon' - with a croaking McCulloch helped through by the audience - is embarrassing. By contrast, the lower-keyed 'Rust' is delivered with beauty and emotion, McCulloch excelling in his role as the errant prodigal son who invites love and forgiveness because of the twinkle in his eye. 'Silver' and 'Dancing Horses' skip youthfully. The percussive 'Zimbo' -- unexpectedly and movingly dedicated to De Freitas -- is utterly majestic. However, only three songs date from after 1987." -- Dave Simpson, The Guardian
November 30th, 2003 Echo and the Bunnymen London, England; Shepherds Bush Empire Theatre Show of Strength Rescue Silver Seven Seas Rust Crocodiles Bedbugs and Ballyhoo Bring on the Dancing Horses The Back of Love The Killing Moon The Cutter I'll Fly Tonight All My Colours (Zimbo) Over the Wall Do It Clean Nothing Lasts Forever/Walk on the Wild Side Lips Like Sugar Heads Will Roll Ocean Rain NOTES: "For 'Do it Clean', Sergeant slashed out a savage riff, his pendulous fringe swinging in time, and the song morphed into several others, ad-libbed by McCulloch, one of them the Doors' 'LA Woman'. It was a bit of a mess, frankly, but a glorious one which, contrary to all the laws of rock and roll reunions, took you right back to the real thing. " -- Andrew Perry, Telegraph.co.uk

I took as my starting point Steve Doughty's excellent and comprehensive Bunnymen Recordings site, and have filled in gaps using the Seven Seas Archive (which went back to January 1st, 1999 at the time I copied it all into text files), as well as the various other web pages and articles cited in my listings. This is still very much a work in progress. I have received a good deal of help from members of the Seven Seas and Bunnymen.com communities -- thank you all!
