Say hello to our ARL Alumni!

Kodiak
January 15, 2001

You never know what you're going to find at the Animal Rescue League. Brian was interested in adopting a Labrador Retriever the day he stopped in for a look around. He wasn't sure if many Labs ended up at the shelter, but he thought it was worth a look. Much to his surprise (and delight), he found Kodiak, a 9-month old chocolate Labrador Retriever. Kodiak had been turned in by his owners because he "was too much of a responsibility and took up too much of their time." Brian doesn't see it that way. He sees time spent with Kodiak as time well spent.
The pair hike together as often as they can just about anywhere in Pennsylvania, including the Laurel Highlands. Kodiak even has his own backpack and carries his own supplies (water dish and food) and his bedroll. Of course, the first time he tried out his new backpack, he crawled into some briar bushes and came out without it. He made Brian go in and bring it back out for him.
Kodiak takes every opportunity he can find to cool off - any stream or creek is an open invitation for a quick plunge. It doesn't even take something as deep as a stream for Kodiak - his favorite sport is stopping at every mud puddle so he can lay down in it.

One of Kodiak's favorite hiking pals is his buddy Thompson. Thompson was a stray found by Brian's friend Rob. The four guys enjoy getting together on weekends and hitting the trails. Kodiak and Thompson love curling up next to the campfire after a long day of hiking and sniffing the trails.

Kodiak is proof that purebred dogs do end up in animal shelters. If you are searching for a specific breed of dog, don't be afraid to stop by the Animal Rescue League and take a look around. You may end up finding your new best friend, just like Brian did.
