Game Review
Hesperia Christian played its final non-confernce home game against Div IVA Woodcrest Christian and won 63-57 behind sophmore Mike Petersen's first double double of his career. Both teams opened sluggish due to the Christmas break with a lackluster 16-12 first quarter won by HCS. The Royals woke up first and out played the Patriots 19-13 in the second quarter. The Patriot defense made too many mistakes in allowing Woodcrest Christian to get many second efforts.
In the third quarter both teams played evenly if somewhat unexciting. In the fourth quarter, HCS showed its true heart playing possibly its toughest and best fourth quarter of the season. Woodcrest led 46-43 going into the final quarter. All of the Patriots picked up their game, fighting for every rebound and playing super defense. The coaching staff was superb in controlling the game in the final five minutes with timeouts and substitutions. Every shot was well chosen even if every one did not go in. Trevor Wagstaffe who was 0-5 from the three point range hit his only three of the night that put HCS ahead for good with about two minutes left. Both Lorne Barton and Petersen combined for 28 of the team's 43 rebounds. Petersen played the best game of his young varsity career not only getting rebounds but scoring 20 points. More importantly, he forced the Royals into fouling him where he got 9 of 13 from the charity line. Nate Glass was a perfect 2-2 in field goals and Josh Hamilton had 17 points and was 4-4 from the free throw line. Soph Zach Howard had a critical 3 pointer and more importantly got 5 rebounds. Soph Billy Hague played a solid game again with seven points and 2 important steals. It was an A+ fourth quarter. Had the Patriots played like this in the final quarter of the Grace Brethren and Linfield Christian games, they would have won both. Woodcrest Christian is now 5-5 while HCS goes to 9-4. HCS plays Linfield Christian in Temecula on Friday night to seek revenge for an earlier loss.
