Miami, FL - Telemundo is proud to announce it will produce and air an unprecedented event: the tribute concert “Celia Cruz: ˇAzúcar!” honoring the undisputed queen of salsa, Celia Cruz. Two of the most legendary Latin entertainers of our times, Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony, will host the special event on Telemundo. The air date will be announced at a later time.. “Celia Cruz: ˇAzúcar!” will feature exciting performances of top stars in the music industry as they come together to pay tribute to the most loved and admired “guarachera” and her longstanding career.
“We are extremely proud and thrilled to be the producers of something so special," said Manuel Martínez-Llorián, Executive Vice President of Programming and Production for Telemundo. "Celia has always been part of our family and we've always had her unconditional support for all of our programs and events. It fills us with joy to be able to humbly show her what she means to Telemundo and to her fans."
Celia Cruz has recorded more than 70 albums, which have garnered numerous gold and platinum records, plus more than a hundred awards from prestigious institutions worldwide. She has received fifteen Grammy Award nominations, winning it for the first time in 1989. True to her winning tradition, this great interpreter has made Latin Grammy history: since the award was introduced in 2000, Celia has won it three consecutive times.
They chose Gloria and Marc Anthony to host this event as symbols of Cuba and Puerto Rico, respectively -- the islands that dwell close to
each other in Celia Cruz's heart.

Emilio Estefan Sr., father of the Latin music mogul, has died of natural causes. He was 83. Estefan Sr. died in his Miami Beach home on Tuesday. Emilio Estefan Jr. learned of his father's death while skiing in Colorado on his 50th birthday. The father played the plump and comical ambassador in a music video for the Miami Sound Machine's hit song Conga, which featured singer Gloria Estefan, wife of Estefan Jr. The Miami Sound Machine's office was once located in Estefan Sr.'s garage. His son later built a home for his parents on his Star Island compound. Estefan Sr. was born in Santiago de Cuba and moved to Spain with Estefan Jr. in 1966. His wife and another son stayed in Cuba because the boy was of military draft age and couldn't leave until 1980. Estefan Sr. came to Miami in 1968, a year after Estefan Jr., and opened a clothing business in Hialeah. Estefan Jr. said his father gave away most of his riches. "My dad has made money here, but has almost none because he supports about 16 families. He helps people," he said in a 1988 interview with El Nuevo Herald. "One time I gave him a Rolex watch and he gave it to someone else." Estefan Sr. is also survived by five grandchildren. Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow.
