Medallion of Excellence for Community Service for Gloria & Emilio
Emilio and Gloria Estefan have created enormous success in their professional,
personal and public lives. The professional success of Gloria Estefan began in
the early 1980s with the sensational mega hit “Conga” with the Miami Sound
Machine. In addition to becoming global phenomena in pop music, Gloria and
husband/producer Emilio have always made it a priority to give of their time and
resources. They were instrumental in arranging a benefit concert that resulted
in raising nearly $3 million for hurricane relief in Florida. Both have received
numerous awards–including several Cable Ace awards for Emilio and the Ellis
Island Congressional Medal of Honor presented to Gloria. The Estefans have also
been very successful in mentoring and developing young Latino musicians.
The Gloria Estefan Foundation, created in 1997, supports charitable programs for
disadvantaged children, to empower young people through education and
opportunity. Its mission includes funding annual scholarships for students who
need financial assistance. Inspired by the founder’s vision, the foundation
aims to reach those who struggle outside the safeguards of society by promoting
health development. Through the foundation, the Estefans help a variety of
projects with support that goes beyond the monetary.
