WHITEHEAD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES SUMMER FESTIVAL 2014

Launching the programme for the forthcoming Whitehead Festival, WCA chair Jeremy Jones spoke of this year’s calendar:

“The festival has long been a landmark on the town’s calendar and this year we have another full programme with CAYC Raft Race on Saturday 26 July opening the festival, a favourite in the town’s Summer diary.

With the festival kicked off, many old familiar favourites return: the Tea Dance for the young at heart; the Fun Day organised by the Whitehead Spar; Rhythm and Rhyme at the Library; Park Run at Jubilee Woods; Storytelling at The Bank House; the Garden Society’s annual show while the more hot blooded amongst us will be tempted by Tango Taster Event and the football and tennis tournaments; and of course no one will want to miss the annual Molly Coppock Quiz in The Whitecliff Inn.

The next weekend, Saturday 2 August, will follow up with the Mods & Rockers Rally at the seafront with music groups, hot food stalls, tattoo artists, vintage clothing stalls, custom motorbike and scooter display and a spectacular ride out by those participating. It promises be a tremendous day. “Them” and “The Sabrejets” will be playing at the After Party in Whitehead Community Centre (doors open 8 pm) - all very exciting.

Saturday 9 August is the now, well-established Food & Folk Fest at Whitehead Recreation Grounds. As well as wonderful food stalls selling the best local produce, we will have folk music from Island Folk, The Quiet Men and Gaucho. There are tons of attractions for all the family – steam train rides, vintage car display, climbing wall, Phil’s Farm, and a display of birds of prey. Volunteers have put a lot of effort into organising the day and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

This year Whitehead Community Association is pleased to support the NI Children’s Hospice with the participation of Whitehead’s local businesses and shops.  So look out for Operation Purple throughout the festival fortnight.

Of course, all this needs some help so we would like to thank those organisations who are sponsoring the week: Carrickfergus Borough Council, Irish Salt Mines, Subway Carrickfergus, Translink and Cannon Motors of Carrickfergus.”

Don’t forget you can avail of Northern Ireland Railways’ discounted travel to and from Whitehead- click www.translink.co.uk to plan your journey.
