Transformers: Alternators
Robot Mode
Due to Transformers' amazing success among older audiences (nearly 20% of the sales, in fact, went to collectors), Hasbro decided to release, in late 2003, a special line of Transformers that were ultra-realistic, with model car alternate modes. Hasbro signed a deal with several automobile manufacturers, such as Subaru and Chevrolet, in order to make this unique dream a reality. Nearly all of the Alternators are very obvious "modern versions" of the classic G1 characters, and many of them even have similar-structured robot modes in addition to the many G1 nods. Given the extreme amount of work that had to go into making a single Alternator, however, they came out in a numbered series, with only about 2 coming out every four months or so. Alternators lasted for a while, but sadly was only a hit with older collectors, and slowly petered out with fewer and fewer releases each year until it finally finished with the SDCC Exclusive Rodimus toy in 2007.
