ANCIENT RULES

PHAROH RIDES TO WAR v 3.4 A set of rules for the ancients period, set up for the "Teuber/Stribling" 20mm armis of Assyria and Egypt. Eric Teuber created the army waaaaay back in the mid-1970s using Scruby 20mm ancients figure. Jay Stribling came into posession of the armies around 2001 and has reorganized them and added a few units.

This was the current edition of this rules as of June 2011.

QUICK ANCIENTS An Ancients Rules Set, originally written by Fr. Aelred Glidden and printed in MWAN. Jay Stribling has begun the process of modifying them away from their original simplicity. Similar to our QUICK TRICORNE rules.

ANCIENTS BY RAL A variant of our medieval RULES BY RAL set. Not yet tested, but we will remedy that shortly!

RAMMING SPEED - Ancient Naval Wargame Rules
By William Johnson. The Jackson Gamers have used these for 15+ years, along with home-made 15mm War Galleys to have great fun! Now they are on our web site along with William's Log sheets and "How-to" article for building the ships for the game.

MEDIEVAL AND RENNIASSANCE RULES

SHIELDS AND BLADES v10, Eric Wood's Improved medieval and dark ages rules. Actually, as of 2002, Eric is using the "Simple 100 years war" rules instead of these more complex ones, but they are a gem of technique and concept.

SIMPLE 100 YEARS WAR RULES Eric Woods' one-page (front and back) rules for Medieval games. From a former Jackson Gamer.

SIMPLE 100 YEARS WAR RULES

RULES BY RAL A modified version of the rules that Ral Partha used to hand out at conventions and which were on their web site at one time.

Robert Whitfield and Jay Stribling picked up this copy at ORIGINS 1985. We have made some additions and a few deletions and added some optional rules, but it is still the same fun game. All units are 12-man infantry or 6-man cavalry units. The only troop types are Peasants, yeomen and Knights. Come with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear...

RULES BY RAL

PIKES AND GENDARMES is a variant of Larry Brom's old STANDARD RULES. We have cut and pasted with it so that we can use our armies of Pikemen, Heavy cavalry, and Arquebusiers. This is more of a "Big Battle" game than the older THE SWORD AND THE PIKE! rules. PIKES AND GENDARMES

SWORD, CROSS, & GOLD A variant for Larry Brom's "The Sword and the Flame" colonial rules set. Conquistadors vs. the Native Americans. This set was cobbled up in the early 1990s so that we could play games with Mark Stevens' beautiful 25mm Aztecs and Spanish. This version (the latest) was the 11/94 revision. Quick, simple, fun!

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

CHARGE yr PIKES! our rules for the English Civil War
For years, these never had a name, just E.C.W. We have been playing this set for 20+ years, and I still cannot resist tinkering with it. All the rules are here, but the flank attack diagram is still missing. It should follow "someday".

CHARGE yr PIKES!

18TH CENTURY RULES

QUICK TRICORNE A modification of a rules set by Fr. Aelred Glidden which was in turn developed from Wally Simon's account of Stephen Simpson's rules for the ARW which appeared in "Wargames Illustrated" #75. They are similar to Donald Featherstone's rules.

QUICK TRICORNE

REASONABLE BROM A variant for Larry Brom's "Standard rules" set. When men were men, wore lace and high heeled boots and would salute you as they shot at you! The wars of the age of reason, the 18th century are the target of this rules set. We have twisted Larry's rules to fit all manner of toy soldiers and this is our latest. As a first edition, expect it to be modified, gentlemen!

REASONABLE BROM

FURIOUS REASON "Lite" version 4.3 and Notes v. 1.9
This is Bill Estes' 18th century variant of the Furious Reason rules which in turn was a synthesis between Age of Reason and Fire and Fury. This has been developed by our resident 18th century specialist (Bill) who produced this merger after much playtesting.

FURIOUS REASON "Lite"

NAPOLEONIC RULES

QUICK NAPOLEONICS A rules set based on our QUICK TRICORDN Set, originally written by Fr. Aelred Glidden and printed in MWAN. Jay Stribling has updated this to the Napoleonic period.

QUICK NAPOLEONICS

IF ONLY WE COULD ALL BE NAPOLEON! Writen by Larry Reeves for 15mm Napoleonic games. Units are Infantry battalions, Cavalry regiments, or Artillery Batteries. Larry has played Napoleonic games for many years and has set forth these rules using innovative mechanics. The Jackson Gamers have played these lots of times and as an example of their play, we finished a game with 30 battalions, 7 cavalry regiments and about 12 batteries in 4 hours. Of course, it helps to have the rules-writer as the game-master.

IF ONLY WE COULD ALL BE NAPOLEON! - Revised 2010

QUICK RULES For Napoleonic Skirmish Games
This is our 1-page set of Napoleonic skirmish rules. The games we have fought so far are a company of Rifles or Jagers versus a similarly sized group of French Chasseurs in 1808 in Spain. But any small infantry skirmish game could be played. Each player controls only 4 to 12 men. Very low level!

QUICK RULES

THE BROM STANDARD RULES, Larry Brom's original rules
These rules covered several periods and had d appendices covering more periods:

  1. 1810 Napoleonics
  2. 1862 American Civil War
  3. 1870 Franco-Prussian War
  4. 1882 British-Egyptian War
The rules are were posted here, but are no longer available. Many of the appendices are now formatted for Chassepot & Needlgun.

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

THE RECONAISSANCE RULE MODULE
ThIs rules module was originally part of the BROM STANDARD RULES, but was removed in a 1979 revison. While intended to be used the the BROM STANDARD RULES, it would work very well with CHASSEPOT AND NEEDLEGUN or many other rules sets. It leads to a sometimes lengthy sub-game played out before the majority of the troops are on the table. Each side has a decision to make about the function and duties of the advance guard.

  1. Should it attempt to seize and hold ground to allow the deployment, as far forward as possible, of the Main Body and Rear Guard of it's own army?
  2. Or should it attempt to exit the enemy's table edge, to gain knowledge of the entry point and the arrival time of the rest of the enemy army?

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

EVERY MAN A BRITON A Zulu war variant for TSATF. All the players are on the British side, and the game runs the native units. This set was published by Sergeants 3 as The Sword to Adventure. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

CLOSE COMBAT Variant for THE SWORD IN THE 20th CENTURY, also works with THE SWORD TO ADVENTURE

Uses multiple dice thrown at once in lieu of Larry Brom's match stand against stand and high dice wins system.

THE SWORD IN CANADA Mark Stevens' takes us to Canada's Rial Rebellion in 1885. The half-indian metis, under Joseph Rial, rebelled against the policies of the Canadian government. They were joined by Cree and Blackfoot Indians. The Canadian army consisted of hastily raised militia units, artillery and infantry "school" units, and the Northwest Mounted Police.

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

THE SWORD IN THE PHILLIPINES A TSATF variant, this time for 'very early 20th century Moro Revellion in the newly-acquired Phillipine Islands. Mark Stevens has used these, along with striking terrain fetures, to run games at HISTORICON, some years ago. Can the U.S. Army and "Big Bill" Taft (Secretary of War) clear up the mess in the islands?

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

THE SWORD IN TIBET Chuck Turnitsa's variant for fighting battles between the British and Tibetans, including two scenarios. As with the other variants, this presents just the tables & charts. You should know and have "The Sword and the Flame" to play this.

THE SWORD IN TIBET

THE SWORD IN PALESTINE Another TSATF variant, this time for The Great War in the middle east. Mark Stevens strikes again! He used this set to run a game at HISTORICON 2000. Just the tables & charts, you should know and have "The Sword and the Flame" to play this.

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

THE SWORD IN MEXICO Yet ANOTHER TSATF variant, this time for The "Maximilian adventure" the French intervention in Mexico - 1864. Mark Stevens does it yet again! He used this set to run a game at HISTORICON 2000 also. Again this is just the tables & charts, you should know and have "The Sword and the Flame" to play this.

This set was published by Sergeants 3. Please contact them to purchase these rules.

THE SWORD IN INDIA Mark Stevens' variant for the Indian Mutiny. Set in 1857-59, this consists of British forces, "John company" units, Loyal Indian units, and irregular formations trying to put down the rebellious units of the Bengal army. This consists mainly of just the tables & charts. You must have"The Sword and the Flame" rules to use this.

RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR RULES

FORWARD COMRADES
This is a revision of Jay Stribling's Russian Civil War rules Red and White with a different sequence of action. This is untested as of yet but we intend to remedy that shortly. As with all of our rules it is subject to change without notice.

FORWARD COMRADES

RED AND WHITE, Jay Stribling's Russian Civil War rules
A fairly low level game, each unit probably represents a company or understrength battalion. We have tested this version numerous times but it should always be considered a work in progress. This is subject to change without notice! Be advised comrades!

ADDITIONAL RULES

WORLD WAR TWO RULES

SKIRMISH RULES The Jackson Gamers have used these rules for 25+ years to game low-level WWII games with 54mm plastic soldiers and tank models. Based on a set by Wally Simon which appeared in Wargamers' Digest" during the 1970s, and modified out of all recognition, these have evolved into what we have put up here. All of the Armor rules (tank vs tank) are not yet there, but you should start with the infantry anyway!

Because of the length, the rules are posted by section

Introductory Section
Section 1 - MOVEMENT
Section 2 - SMALL ARMS
Section 3 - MACHINE GUNS
Section 4 - HAND GRENADES
Section 5 - H.E. SHELLS
Section 6 - SPECIAL WEAPONS
Section 7 - AFV RULES
Section 8 - AFV DAMAGE
Section 9 - TANK AND A.T. GUNS
Section 10 - INFANTRY A.T. WEAPONS
Section 11 - SMOKE
Section 12 - HAND TO HAND
Section 13 - MORALE
Section 14 - WOUNDS AND DEATH

THE SWORD, THE FLAME, MACHINE GUNS AND GRENADES! The ultimate adaptaion of Larry Brom's TSATF colonial rules, taking them into the WWII period. Jay Stribling has used 15mm WWII figures to playtest this quick and bloody small unit game. Major updates and changes to come! Only low level infantry weapons so far.

THE SWORD, THE FLAME, MACHINE GUNS AND GRENADES

NAVAL GAMING RULES

SURFACE WARSHIP By Robert Whitfield and Jay Stribling. Rules for fighting World War Two naval battles. We had a great deal of fun with these rule sets back in the days when we had "the table" in the rear of Jaki's toys. This has been a while in development because the original rule set had been lost and has been re-created from hazy Baby-Boomer memories. Gunnery and Torpedo rules are here so far. Data sheets are not yet here but are coming, as certainly as the "Tokyo Express"!

SURFACE WARSHIP

STEAM, IRON, & TIN (Modified) A variant from the wonderfully simple rules that Minifigs used to hand out at conventions. They had home-made 15mm American Civil War Ironclads that used their 15mm ACW figures and cannons. I first played these at ORIGINS 85 and have loved them ever since.

STEAM, IRON, & TIN (Modified) No Longer Available

IRONCLAD GUNBOAT The rules set we have used for 20 years for American Civil War naval battles. An adaptation of a set by Lowry and Wham originaly published by Guidon Games in the 70s.

Someday QUICK ACW - Large Battle games My concept is that players who are pushing "divisons" and "Corps" of troops do not need to be concerned with individual casualties. Something quick, which takes stands off rather than "Men".

Someday QUICK WWII NAVAL Something simpler than our "Surface Warship" rules.

Someday THE SWORD IN SECESSION A variant for TSATF set during the American Civil War. Everyone has a company and is skirmishing against Johnny Reb or Billy Yank.

Awaiting Scanning! VENI VIDI VICI! Sam Maxwell's ancient rules for 15mm figures. We used this for many years. Sam (a former Jackson Gamer) has given permission to post these. - Jay Stribling

Someday HOUSE RULES for NAPOLEONICS Our original rules for 25mm Napoleonics which we used in college. Ed Sansing has scanned these 30-year old rules as a PDF file. Soon you will be able to download this antique set. Written orders for movement & fire and bucket loads of casualties. We used the 1/20 Vietmeyer organization for these rules. I wrote these rules but I no longer support them.

Thats all so far!

Other rule sets and variants will be added here from time to time. While there are some items contemplated, or "in progress" as shown above, there is no schedule or order as to what may be added.
