Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat

Prelude
Warriors of a Purpose

1988, Somewhere on a remote island by Japan

"On your marks, get set, GO!", yelled the master as his two pupils sprinted down the path in a blaze of speed. As one pupil slowly gained ground on the other, he looked back only to see nothing but the dense forest trees. When he slowed to see if his opponent had gotten into trouble, he heard soft footsteps above him high in the branches of the trees.
"Got ya Ryu!", Ken yelled as he front flipped out of the trees. Ryu was helpless by Ken's surprise and was forced to watch Ken land on his shoulders knocking him down. Ken got up, brushed himself off, and took off laughing.
The force of the hit had knocked Ryu flat, face first to the ground, but as he got up he swore that not only he would beat Ken in the race, but after kick his butt. He was tired of Ken's stupid practical jokes, they were getting old.
After about a couple of miles, Ryu had run close enough to be able to see Ken in the distance. "Wow, Ken got a big lead on me while I was down," said a tired Ryu. Ryu frowned as he remembered what Ken had done to him, "I will not let him beat me!"
Seeing Ken only made Ryu try harder to catch up to his adversary. Within the last mile of the race Ken and Ryu were head to head furiously fighting for the win. Ryu looked in Ken's eyes as he saw him wink at him. Ryu fueled by revenge and Ken fueled on pride, gave a final burst of speed and crossed the painted finish line in a tie.
After they crossed the line they both fell to the ground in exhaustion. Sitting there waiting for them, and offering them water was their master, Sho.
Ken looked at his elderly master carefully. Ken didn't know his age but figured he had to be over 70 years old. He had white hair and was in extraordinary shape for a man of his age, but Ken still thought that he was too old to beat him and Ryu in a long distance footrace.
Ken asked in between gasps of air, "Master how did you get here before us? The race was over six miles long and you don't even own a car."
"Yes, master. We sprinted our hardest the whole way," added Ryu.
Sho just shook his head and replied as his white hairs swept over his face, "You kids are only fifteen, I will teach you how when you become weathered martial artists. You then will be able to fight off the evil forces of darkness and save the planet."
Ken and Ryu stood up and stretched their sore muscles. Not satisfied Ken spoke again to his master, "When will that be master? When we are about 50? Hey, I'm already a weathered martial artist! I've been here in this remote island for about ten years and I've learned to be the 'ancient chosen one' in your prophecy. To beat up those ancient demon warriors. Man, if any one of those guys came up to me, I'd beat their butts, up and down this forest."
The master looked at Ryu and asked, "Do you feel the same way Ryu?"
Ryu thought about it, unlike Ken who was raised in luxury, he was raised in the slums of Japan. He had memories of the murders, and violent crimes that used to happen in his neighborhood. In fact, he still had nightmares of seeing his older brother Ikira, get killed before his eyes. His parents used their life savings to send Ryu here to become someone and to learn the arts of combat. Never again would Ryu's parents allow one of their kids be killed. No, he couldn't afford to be sent away, he couldn't bear it.
"No, master. I know that we can still learn much from you. I wish to stay and learn under your supervision." Replied Ryu as he started walking back to the camp. Ken watched his friend walk away. The master then had Ken go with him to keep him from getting into trouble in the dangerous woods.
As they walked along the trail, Ken confronted him, "Hey Ryu, man I thought we were supposed to always stick together, what happened back there?"
Ryu started to get mad. "Ken, unlike you I don't have anywhere to go when I'm out of here. If I get the master mad at me and he makes me leave, where will I go? You must be crazy if you think I'll ever go back to that hell hole unless it was to take my parents out of it. But no, if you get kicked out you always have one of your gigantic mile-sized mansions to go to. The hardest thing for you to do is to pick which mansion to live in!" He said in an irritated tone.
Ken looked surprised, "Ryu, what's your problem man? You're acting weird. Me being rich has never bothered you before."
Ryu started to run ahead, "Sorry Ken, I'm tired and lately I haven't gotten much sleep. Just leave me alone and let me clear my head."
Ken stared at the ground. In a puddle he saw his red Karate uniform and his blond hair blowing in the wind. He thought back and remembered his transition from a millionaire to a warrior. Ryu didn't understand how hard it was from having 20 butlers that did your every desire to having to pull your own weight.
If you wanted food as a student of Sho you had to kill, scalp, and cook it yourself. No help whatsoever. After being there for so long, Ken really felt like a man's man and was proud of his accomplishments. He had always thought as Ryu as his equal (but of course he would still trash talk like he was the best), and treated him as one. Until today he thought Ryu had no problem with him ever being rich.
As Ryu ran ahead up the path, he saw a very large pit in the path. He and Ken had nicknamed it the Death drop and for a good reason. The hole was in a square like shape with all the sides being at least 30 feet wide. If you missed or didn't clear the jump you would fall about 80 feet down to your instant death.
Dangers like this weren't anything new to the two students. Sho had had them train in rough dangerous places since they were young. The training had paid of releasing primal instincts and survival techniques the kids would have not ever experienced and learned elsewhere. In turn they grew stronger and more confident about themselves than they thought possible.
"I can clear it," thought Ryu as he sped up, "It's only about 30 feet wide."
The bare footed, 15 year old, brown haired, Japanese boy, jumped at the ledge of the cliff and soared through the chilly, cold, air. As he safely landed on the other side he noticed his white Karate uniform that he trained in flowed in the wind. Ryu smiled in satisfaction of his almost perfect jump, "A piece of cake."
As Ken sped up for the jump, his bare foot was cut on a sharp rock. Ken yelled, "Oww!" as he, still pumped full with adrenaline, stumbled and jumped too early to clear the pit. Panic went through his mind as he saw that he wasn't going to make it all the way to the other side. At the last second Ken grabbed on to the other side of the pit's grass and weeds, barely holding on for his dear life and dangling over the pit.
"HELP RYU!", screamed Ken in horror as he started to instantly slip.
About 150 meters away Ryu heard the urgent tone in Ken's voice and turned to see what was wrong. As he saw Ken slipping, and trying to hold on for dear life, he took off and ran harder and faster than he had ever done before. This wasn't a race; this was his best friend's life in jeopardy.
Trying to stay on the edge but losing the battle, Ken saw Ryu dash for him but he knew it was already too late. Ken knew he would fall into the dark vortex in a matter of seconds. He looked down to see how far he'd fall but couldn't see, for the sun had set and there were dark shadows removing his sight. Now it was just a countdown of seconds. "Ten…nine…eight…seven…six…five…four," Ken closed his eyes in fear, "Three…two…one…"
As the weeds ripped out of the ground and he started to fall, he felt two cold, firm, hands grab his wrist. "Got ya buddy," his savior said to him. Ken opened his eyes and saw that it was Ryu! He had just made it in the knick of time to save him! As Ryu pulled him up they dropped in exhaustion on the cold, wet, grass. They laid on their backs and looked at the stars while they rested.
Ken spoke first, "Ryu, thanks man I don't know what to say. Sorry about what happened at the race. I was acting stupid."
"It's okay Ken, now that I think about it, it's kind of senseless to bring it up compared to what we just went through."
"Yeah," said Ken as he got up and looked at his bleeding foot, "I read in a book that if you save someone's life at a young age, like us, they're best friends for life."
Ryu helped Ken walk along the path on his hurt foot. After a while He could tell that Ryu was having trouble holding him up. As Ryu let go of Ken and leaned against a tree as he almost fainted to the ground, Ken saw what was the matter.
Ken saw dark red blood on the shoulders of Ryu's white karate uniform. He looked closer at Ryu's head to see that blood was dripping from Ryu's brown hair. Earlier when Ken had seen it he had just thought that it was perspiration from Ryu's amazing 150-meter rescue.
"Ryu, you're bleeding!" Ken told him. He looked at the gash on Ryu's head, "And it's pretty bad."
Ryu felt his throbbing head, "I know, I didn't want to make a big deal of it. My head grazed a rock when I dived for your hand."
Ken ripped a strip of clothing from his sleeve. He then wrapped it around Ryu's head. As they started to walk again, Ryu stopped. He stuck his hand out to Ken, "Best friends for life Ken?"
Ken couldn't pass up the offer, and taking Ryu's hand he said, "Best friends for life." Then the two best friends supported each other because of their injuries and resumed their way back to Sho's hut.

1993 Somewhere in China

"Lou Kang, don't you know how important it is for you to stay here and train for the final battle of Shang Suang and his master. Are those dreams bothering you again?"
"No, it's not the dreams, it's... Grandfather, you've been telling me stories about the fight between good and evil ever since I've been a child. Without my parents, you have been teaching and training me since I've been able to walk. I've had enough. No disrespect to you, the other elders or even 'the great god Raiden', but I don't care about your fantasy evil creatures that can shape shift, spit acid or everything else you said. I need to earn a new, real, life. Maybe I'll find it in America, the land of opportunity."
As Lou Kang climbed into the boat and started off into his new life in America, his mentor turned away in sorrow and defeat. As he reached the council of elders and told them had what happened, the sky suddenly grew dark. The overcast of sudden clouds on a beautiful previously cloudless day only meant one thing.
The dark clouds threw forth thunder and the elders where surprised to see lightning flash over the black sky. Their god was arriving in their time of need! As lightning crashed against the earth, a being appeared from the lightning in the shape of a man. The councilmen gasped and bowed to their knees as, for the first time, the great god Raiden appeared before them.
Raiden, walking toward the oldest and wisest of all the elders and with electricity cackling around him, spoke, "I have heard your great dilemma and know why you sorrow. Lou Kang is but one of the five warriors we need to protect us from the forces of Shang Suang and his master, The Emperor. There is Ken of the United States, Ryu of Japan, Lou Kang of China, a last unknown savior, and I. But don't worry about the unknown warrior, if he is out there, I will find him."
Without giving anyone a chance to speak, Raiden teleported away leaving only the sound of electricity buzzing through the air. The elders sat up and spoke amongst themselves, of the new information the god Raiden had given them. Lord Raiden, Ken, Ryu, and an unknown warrior were going to help Lou Kang, save the world?
