Homosexuality & The Bible

Is homosexuality and same sex marriage Christian? Is it biblical? Is it acceptable in God’s eyes? Those in favour have advanced new interpretations from scripture and arguments that same sex marriage should be accepted. Those opposed adhere to the traditional interpretation. Which view is correct? Is it the “God is love” and therefore that which is “of love” is acceptable? Or is the traditional view right? The new “love” standard is actually in error.

The various positions of different groups within the Anglican Church on same sex marriage are an example of what some churches end up with on this question.

  • Bishop John Selby Spong dismisses all Old Testament prohibitions of homosexuality as ignorance, as old “popular prejudices” and as “morally incompetent.”
  • The Canadian Anglican Church affirmed the “integrity and sanctity” of homosexual relations, but are still “seeking discernment” as well as facing “divisions.”
  • The US Episcopal Church offers “recognition of the unhindered same-sex blessings in its ranks,” and tolerates “openly gay clergy.”
  • In 1998, 82% of the world’s Anglican bishops held to the traditional view that homosexuality was prohibited.
