The Wealth Of Solomon

The Temple Interior

The temple interior was overlaid with gold. This would be a sizable outlay. The temple was 60 cubits long with a 10 cubit vestibule (1 Kg 6:3), making the final length 70 cubits. It was 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide.

The inner sanctuary (the Holy of Holies) was a cube 20 x 20 x 20 cubits. It had an internal surface area of 2400 sq. cubits (4 walls and 2 ceilings, each 20 x 20 cubits). It took 600 gold talents (2 Chr 3:8) to cover this area. Assuming the rest of the temple was overlaid with the same thickness of gold, we can estimate in total how much gold was used.
