Captain's Welcome Letter

Hello, I'm Commodore Alexander Hunter, Commanding Officer of the USS Avalon NCC 06742-B, the third ship to bear the name. The Avalon is a Avalon III-class battleship with the role of heavy attack, Special Forces insertion and command. Her crew are known throughout the STF as the best and the brightest and have to be to execute half of the missions that we do. This vessel is the newest in the line of Avalon projects and without a doubt, is the most tactically superb in ever constructed. Now, let me tell you why.

The Avalon is over 1240 meters long with an estimated displacement of 8,960,000 metric tons and a crew capacity of 2,100 if she is full to her brim. She was designed not as a ship of exploration (although she is perfectly up to the task) but as a ship of war. She boasts double redundant tactical stations on the bridge one for our Tactical Officer and a second for our Security Officer. This means the Avalon can take a pummeling and still be able to fight, but more importantly, can send weapons away quicker.

The helm of the Avalon is state-of-the-art and is extremly responsive. So responsive, in fact, that it allows the Avalon to out manuver ships half her size, even at warp speed. In terms of raw speed, she has a maximum speed of Warp 9.998 for twenty four hours, nearly 5,000 times the speed of light.

The Operations station (to the left of the helm if you're sitting in the Captain's chair) is one of the most important stations on the bridge. The Operations officer must be able to multi-task. Operations is more or less a fusion of the Science, Engineering, and Strategic Analyzation departments. This officer must be able to manage the Avalon's resources, open hailing frequencies, and from time to time, even take over one of the other crew's stations.

Even though we are a battle cruiser, it is very important that we have THE latest in sensor hardware and science personel to ensure that we have proper readings and so we can judge the harm from celestial anomalies, come up with solutions to out of the ordinary problems, and to use their expert opinions in logistics and other tactical planning. The Science station is ALSO redundant, and is featured on large wall stations and the main science station to the forward left on the upper deck.

The Avalon is the only ship in the STF that currently has Starfleet Special Forces soldiers onboard. They are the cream of the crop of infantry forces and are- unlike their Marine and ESU counterparts- required to be fluent in at least two additional languages, appreciate other cultures, and- for lack of a better word- be diplomats. Special Forces soldiers don't just beam in and kill people, although they are more than up to the task, they convince other people to kill eachother. In otherwords, they recruit, train and equip agents in hostile governments to overthrow their leaders. Each SF soldier, from the most seasoned Lieutenant Commander to the lowest Crewman Recruit has the potential responsibility of an Admiral. The forward right station on the upper deck is the SOPS station and is used by the ground force commander or the ODA commander to coordinate their Special Ops troops throughout the ship. One unique capability that the SF Teams have is called Orbital Jumping. Essentially, free falling from the Avalon to a vessel in lower orbit, or, if needs be, to a planet itself.

Engineering is another important area of the ship (actually, every section is important). Without it, we'd be powerless and adrift in space. The Engineer will be responsible for dealing with our two LF-44 Advanced Linear Warp Drive units and FIG-5 Subatomic Unified Energy Impulse Units. Also this department is responsible for the general upkeep of the ship.

In our missions together, we will grow a strong comradery and explore the unknowns of our galaxy.

Places of note:

  1. Combat Information Center: Located on deck 2, this is a large area with its own dedicated computer core (located on decks fourteen and fifteen) intended to coordinate, assimilate and send large amounts of data to connect fleets of starships together. Essentially allows the Avalon to be a roving communications satellite.
  2. Warrior's Hall: Located on deck five in the front most part of the ship, warriors hall has paintings of all the vessels to bear the name Avalon and relics from former battles, such as phaser conduits, pictures and old helm stations. It is essentially a large dance hall for formal activities.
  3. Type 20 Maintenance Tubes: Really just jeffries tubes that extend down the length of the massive cannon along the ventral side of the saucer that allows the cannon to be repaired.
  4. Shuttle Bay 2 and Special Forces Section: Shuttle bay two holds all of the vessel's run abouts and landing craft for the ship's ODA.
  5. Holo Gym: Located on deck thirty, the ship's holo gym is a holodeck that is active 24 hours a day to simulate a full range of work out equipment, areas and themes. There is a quarter mile track, weight room, Olympic sized pool, rappelling tower, etc simulated in meticulous detail.
