Raised Rose Motif
Lesson Five
Marge Hope Thomas

Now you have your motif all done and you are
happy with it Just keep making the same pattern
until you have the number needed to complete
whatever you have decided to make with this
beautiful Raised Rose Motif.

Blocking Your Motif: YOUR CHOICE

Blocking each motif is a matter of choice.
However; blocking allows more uniform motifs and
a finished appearance (like ironing something)

Measure your motifs making sure they are "SQUARE"
to determine what size to block all of them. Put
motifs in cool soapy water (thread/yarn has a
protective coating and washing removes it) and
will clean any smudges that may occur during the
making of them or handling them. Hey, accidents
happen...

There are several ways to block them. This is
how I do it:

I use a piece of 1/4 plywood about 2 foot by 2
foot. I measure and mark the size of my motif.
Using stainless steel nails, I hammer them in at
the corners that mark the size of my motifs.
This way I can block lots of them at once
stacking them on top of each other with a little
breather space between the stacks.

Others might use a "foam" board, card board, or a
cushion from the sofa, a wall, or what ever is
best for you...But no matter what you use you
must use stainless steel pins or nails (Since
the motifs are wet we don't want to take a chance
of any rust forming on them...heaven forbide.).

After washing and rinsing, just hook the corners
of your motifs over the nails/pins and let dry.

Sewing your pieces together. Like everything
else creative; there is more than one way to do
it. It is all in the look you want with the
finish project. Making a ridge on the back,
leaving a ridge on front side, or leaving no
ridge at all making the motifs look like one
whole motif. You can also loop them together
making a finished rim around each motif faceup.
This you will have to play with yourself and
finish the way you like it. Afterall, we are
creating aren't we?...

REMEMBER NO KNOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WEAVE WEAVE
WEAVE..just a reminder.

You can sew them together in one straight row at
a time then sewing the rows together.

OR you can sew in a circular fashion attaching
corner to corner on around continuing to add
motifs as you go. I prefer to sew them together
front side up so I can be sure everything is
together and uniform matching stitch by stitch.

Using a Tapestry Needle (round tip) the size
needed for the Yarn/thread put the 2 motifs side
by side. Take a long piece of Yarn/Thread the
same color as your project and pull thru a corner
stitch (middle stitch of corner)of one motif and
in the same stitch on the other motif and pull
thread/yarn (leaving about 4 inches of
thread/yarn hanging at the beginning). Take you
threaded needle and weave from side to side of
each motif taking either the front stitch or back
stitch of both stitches and pulling thread/yarn
nice and neat. Confused? Nayyyyyy you will see
as you start sewing! Continue this to the end of
each motif and continue adding motifs until you
need to rethread. Leave yourself at least 2
inches to weave into motifs or you can add
another length to existing thread by knotting
them together making sure the knot stays under
the motifs leaving a couple inches to weave in
the back of the motifs. See I am not that hard
on knotting am I....lol...Sewing thread can be
knotted because you can weave them behind the
project and not see them. Your choice!!!

Different forms of weaving:

A Crochet stitch leaves a two edged stitch. As
you look at the stitch determine left/right or
top/bottom. Lets use the left/right concept:

Working on the front (top) side of motifs:

Take your threaded needle on through the right
stitch of motif # 1 and over to left stitch on
motif #2 and pull through. Now put needle
through next stitch on Motif #2 and over to next
right stitch on Motif #1. This leaves an
appearance of a
crochet stitch throughout the project.

OR:
Take your threaded needle through the left side
of motif #1 and through corresponding stitch
right on motif #2 and pull. Put needle in next
stitch on motif #2 right then through to
corresponding stitch left side on motif #1. This
leaves an appearance of a continued motif as one.

OR:
Take your threaded needle through left and right
of motif #1 and on over through left and right of
motif #2. Put needle in next stitch on motif #2
right and left on over to motif #1 right to
left. This leaves a ridge around each motif as
if framed.

OR:
Working from the back (bottom) side
you can work the stitches the same way as
above...just in reverse...

DONE DONE DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT;

Some people like to edge their work. If this is
the case, all you have to do is make a loop in
one corner of finished project and do a SC/DC/HDC
all the way around. Or we can have another
project on adding a lacey look on the edges.

Feedback time: Let me know and I will do another
issue with a trim...
