Angels
Angels, pronounced as "Shito" in Japanese, ("Disciple" in English), are mysterious entities that first came up 15 years ago just before the "Second Impact". The Third Angel suddenly strikes Tokyo-3 after 15 years. They come in different forms and always attack solitarily. Their real aim of coming is still unknown. Angels are possibly the evolved forms of mankind. Human's can be considered as the 18th Angel . Their names were given according to the Angels' names from the "Dead Sea Scrolls". They were sleeping underground until 15 years ago when the first Angel named "ADAM" was discovered and awakened by scientists in Antarctica. To reduce damage, they attempted reducing ADAM to its egg form, and this caused the "Second Impact".
The angels, which serve as the series "bad guys" are much more than bizarre monsters with funny names, they're actually carefully crafted representations of honest-to-god angels, hand-picked from pseudo-biblica obscuria. Since very few angels are named in the bible, such as Lucifer and Gabriel, virtually all of them come from Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha. These two bodies of work represent various storieswritten about biblical subjects and characters, but have been relegated to semicanonical status by the church. Most of these stories were written in the intertestamental period (few hundred years between writting of the old and new testament) which are nearly impossible to find.
All Angels can generate an A.T. Field to protect themselves from any violence attack and which causes all of Earth's conventional weapons to be absolutely useless. All of them use their super scientific capabilities as their weapons. Most Angels can generate a new capability or improve their old capability through evolution. Even if damaged severely, it will repair itself, or it would fail as a self-autonomous invasion weapon. The only proven method so far to destroy the Angels are to take out their A.T. Field first, then to go after the red core, which is present in all Angels. Although Angels look powerful, most of them have the same weakness which is the red core on their body. This red core has many functions which are unknown but scientists believe that the main function of this red core (also known as the S2 Engine later on) is to provide energy to Angel (converts mass to energy with NO LOSSES). Once the red core is destroyed, the Angel will be out of function.
After a long battle with Angels so far, we know that there are no systematic organization among Angels. They all come alone to challenge Humanity.
The angels are composed of materials that have the characteristics of both particles and waves , like light. It has a characteristic like a power generator was collected from the sample, but mankind still doesn't know how it works. The unique wave pattern of the angels are similar to human genes (99.89% similar), even though the material is different.
The Forgotten
These are Angels that were predicted and named in the Dead Sea Scrolls, but never appeared to challenge humanity. The fault in the scrolls has been a puzzle to both NERV & SEELE.
