"Duffman is thrusting in the direction of the problem"!!-Simpsons. MacDUFF likewise thrusts in the direction of restoring the throne!
A Scottish nobleman, Thane of Fife, who suspected Macbeth as the murderer of Duncan and later leads the revolt against Macbeth. He does this to put the rightful heir, Malcolm, to the throne and partially to revenge his wife's and son's murder. He is a symbol of triumphant good: he rejects Macbeth, proves dedication to Scotland, over comes magic that Macbeth relies on and in the end, kills Macbeth, the villain. Also, the reader is deeply moved when he greives for his wife and children. This exposes his virtue that he is a complete human who cannot severe bonds of kinship and love. His acceptance of grief strongly contrasts the inhumanity of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
Macduff's existence in history is uncertain. Never the less, his name most likely represents a ruler of Fife who was an ally of Malcolm against Macbeth. His birth by C-section is more interesting since it was extremely rare in medieval Scotland, if practiced at all.
