Game Review
Hesperia Christian came to Lancaster to fix those things that needed fixing and beat Bethel Christian in the process 78-47. Trevor Wagstaffe and Josh Hamilton led the team with each scoring 14 points. But it was Nate Glass and Sean Bayer who were impressive playing their best games of the year. Glass had his first double double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Sean Bayer had his varsity career high of 8 points. Matt Boesch continued to show he can contribute with a nice 3 point shot and 2 assists. As was expected, Bethel Christian really never got into the game with HCS taking a 18-8 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles' shooters only got 4 three point shots all game and the Patriots demonstrated how they should be rebounding every game with 50 rebounds. Every player had at least one rebound. Again HCS revealed their Achilles Heel which is an inability to make free throws. The team shot a miserable 48% from the charity line and that would have been 38% if Wagstaffe was not 4 for 4. That kind of shooting makes them one of the worst free throw shooting teams in Div VAA, maybe Socal. The best shooter should be shooting 90% and the worst shooter about 60%. Our best shooter is shooting 70%. But they appear to have fixed their rebounding problem and now just have eight more games to straighten out their free throw shooting. HCS is now 11-5 (2-0) while Bethel Christian drops to 3-8 (0-2). The Patriots have their first home league game Tuesday against Joshua Springs.
Game Preview
Hesperia Christian plays their second game of a two game road trip against Bethel Christian in Lancaster. HCS is now ranked #4 in Socal Div VAA by CIF. Bethel Christian is 0-1 in Agape play losing 58-37 to Joshua Springs in their opener. The two big scorers for the Eagles are Thies and Ustares. The Eagles' weakness is rebounding in that they have no tall players. HCS should be able to get 45-50 rebounds tonight. Bethel Christian's gym is rugged and small, so the Patriots will not be able to fast break as much as usual. This is also a chance for the Patriot first team to end this game early and get the second team needed playing time.HCS will also have to really play defense tonight like they did against VVC. If Thies and Ustares get a rhythm, this game could get closer than Coach Dobyns wants it. The Eagles are also susceptible to the press and this might be an excellent opportunity to work out those bugs. Finally HCS has got to improve their free throw shooting which is absolutely atrocious. If they can use this game to fix these problems, then it will be a good road trip.
