Foreign Language
ARABIC (BEGINNING) Fee: $60
"The need for Arabic linguists has never been greater," according to
Professor of Arabic Language, Karin Ryding of Georgetown University.
With Arabic the native language of over 200 million people living in
20 different countries, it is essential that more Americans develop
and maintain linguistic and cultural expertise in order to build a
better understanding of the Arab world. While there are many Arabic
dialects, including Classical Arabic, this course will concentrate
on a widely spoken, adapted dialect, known as Modern Standard
Arabic, which is used most often in books, newspapers, on television
and radio, in political speeches, and in conversation between
educated Arabs from different countries. Once you have learned
standard Arabic, it is relatively easy to adapt to a local dialect
later.

studies. The interpretation (oral translation) component of the

HOW TO BE A SPANISH INTERPRETER/TRANSLATOR
(MEDICAL AND LEGAL) (INTERMEDIATE) Fee: $60
As medical professionals find ever-increasing numbers of non-English
speakers in their patient loads, they realize that they need the
services of highly skilled interpreters to make sure that they are
communicating adequately with their patients. This course is
designed to teach English-Spanish and Spanish-English medical and
legal/court interpreting skills to students who already speak
Spanish, but have not had training in interpreting. It will help you
acquire the techniques of sight translation, consecutive
interpretation, and simultaneous interpretation even if you have had
no previous exposure to those techniques. Medical interpreters are
needed in a variety of settings; hospitals, clinics, doctor's
offices, mental health and psychiatric facilities, and quasi-legal
proceedings such as medical-legal evaluations for workers'
compensation claims or personal injury lawsuits and hearings to
determine mental competence or eligibility for benefits. For those
working in a court setting, common terms/phrases will be covered and
practiced, as well as the ability to be precise and maintain the
flow of the proceedings. A wide range of subject matter and
terminology is covered in these different settings, and many
interpreters choose to specialize in one field or another.

SPANISH (BEGINNING) Fee: $60
As a beginning student in this course in basic Spanish, you will
study grammar, conversation, and culture. It is designed for those
who have Spanish-speaking customers or employees or anticipate doing
business with Hispanics. North Carolina and Cumberland County in
particular has an ever-increasing population of Hispanic residents
and this course will provide you with an opportunity to learn basic
conversational skills and gain a better understanding of Hispanic
culture. Topics covered will include the alphabet and pronunciation,
key words, phrases, and basic conversation. If you own or manage a
retail clothing or grocery store or restaurant; work in an
employment agency, administer social services; or work in
manufacturing, construction, or farming, it will be to your
advantage to enroll in this course. Trying to communicate with
others who do not speak your language may be difficult, but not
impossible and any improvement in your skills should pay off with
increased business and a greater appreciation for another culture.
This course should also be of interest to those who anticipate
traveling to or living in Latin America or Spain.
