After Tim Howard decided to skip college and signed with the New Jersey Imperials,
he became a member of Nike's Project 40. He was allocated to the MetroStars in 1998, when they placed Zach Thorton
on the disparsal draft since MLS expanded. Howard went on to be the back-up 'keeper for the '98, '99. He again
backed up Mike Ammann in 2000, but injures to Mike, resulted in solid gold minutes from Howard. His tremendous
play caught the attention of the US's Olympic coaching staff, which in the end selected him to play for the US in
Olympics in Sydney. Unfortunately, Brad Friedel, a much more experienced 'keeper was called up, and played every minute.
In 2001, the MetroStars traded Mike Ammann to D.C. because both deserved of a starting role. That year, Howard became an
star in MLS. He was voted to play in the All-Star game. He played in the 2nd half, and saved a Luis Hernandez
penalty kick. Was selected as the MetroStars Defender of the Year, MLS Goalkeeper and Humanitarian of the Year. Tim was also
selected several times by US coach Bruce Arena to participate in camp.
