The Los Angeles Galaxy had no idea what a big mistake they did when they waived
Clint Mathis to sign ex-Mexican star Luis "el Matatdor" Hernanadez. Needing to clear cap space, the Galaxy waived
Mathis and Joe Franchino, and since the MetroStars had the worst record in the league, they got the first pick. They
obviously got the better player.
Mathis became a star instantly. He scored a goal in his first game as Metro versus the Chicago Fire. He revealed
the infamous I LOVE NY shirt when he scored versus the Galaxy. Mathis broke a league record with five goals versus
the Dallas Burn. Clint finished the year with MLS All-Star Start, 2 Player of the Month Awards
and second place in the scoring chart, only behind Mamaduo Diallo.
Mathis continued his magical run of 2000 into 2001. He became a regular on the US National Team as they prepared for
the second round of World Cup qualifying. He scored versus Brazil in a friendly. In World Cup qualifying, Mathis
assisted on the game-winning goal versus Mexico, and scored a game-winning goal of a freekick in Honduras. He also
marked 2 goals in Germany. Clint also did his job in MLS. He scored a hat trick versus the Kansas City Wizards,
along with a 80 yard run the eventually became MLS Goal of the Year. But unfortunately, he tore his ACL in a US
training camp as they got ready for a friendly versus Ecuador, and didn't play for the rest of the season.
2002 was his year to prove that no injury could slow him down. He scored 2 goals versus Honduras. He scored 2 goals
in MLS before being called up to play in the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In World Cup preparation, he scored 1 goal versus
Jamaica after being subbed in just minutes before. There was a lot of controversy at the World Cup about Clint's
desire to play. He was limited in playing time, but he did manage to score in his only start versus South Korea. He
played at the end of the quarter final game versus Germany, and would have earned a point had Tony Sanneh connected on
his cross.
