Steve Jolley came to New York when the Metros were in the process of rebuilding the
team after the 1999 nightmare. He quickly gelled with Daniel Hernandez, and Mike Petke to be the best defensive force
in the league. He managed to play every possible minute for the MetroStars. That year he even earned a call-up to the
National Team, but unfortunately got injured and could not participate in camp. Steve has become a favorite among the
fans. He has his own article, Just Jolley, that is pusblished monthly at MetroStars.com. Jolley also has a personal
charity organization where he auctions soccer memrobila, often autographed balls and jerseys from the MetroStars
and the US National Team.
Jolley entered the league in 1997 when he was drafted by the L.A. Galaxy. He only played 12 games because he tore his
right ACL. The accident came when he went against Adam Frye from the Tampa Bay Mutiny June 15.
Steve had a much better season in 1998. He started 23 of the 28 games he played. He also scored his first career MLS
goal against the Chicago Fire on August 8.
In the Galaxy's MLS Championship run in 1999, Jolley made the switch to central defense. The season, L.A. had a league
low 29 goals. He scored 2 goals, both off headers, and game-winners, and notched one assist.
With a year under his belt with the Metros, Jolley had another steller performance in 2001. Again, he played every
possible minute for the Red and Black, including the MLS regular season, playoffs, Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, and the
Copa Merconorte. Only him and goalie Tim Howard have ever matched that feat. He didn't score a goal in this season, but
manage to record 3 assists. Jolley was also voted to start in the MLS All-Star game for the East.
