Cigarette-Smoking Man

In the Pilot episode, Dana Scully is called into Blevin's office, and is assigned to The X-Files. In the office, there is also an older man smoking a cigeratte. At the end of the episode, he is seen covering up evidence from Mulder's and Scully's first case together. This man is the Cigarette-Smoking Man, or the CSM.

Not much is known about the CSM, not even his real name(well, maybe. . explain that soon). In the 4th season's Musings of a Cigeratte-Smoking Man, Frohike believes that he found out everything about the CSM's past. It seems that he was in the military(with Mulder's dad) and was assigned to assassinate someone- President Kennedy. He also killed Martin Luther King, Jr, while others took the blame. He became a part of the conspiracy- witnessing the murder of an alien. CSM wanted to be a writer, but he couldn't get published until finally when he was older. However, it was for a junk magazine that nobody read, and they changed his ending.

In 2nd season's Anasazi, the CSM goes to visit Mulder's father. He and Bill Mulder had worked together for the conspiracy, but Bill Mulder had left.

In Patient X/The Red and the Black, Mulder meets Cassandra Spender, who claims to be the CSM's ex-wife. CSM's "real" name is C.G.B. Spender. "C.G.B." asks his son, Jeffrey Spender, who is also Cassandra Spender's son, to join. At first Spender complies, but when he learns that his father has been experimenting on his mother, he turns against him. His father states that he wish he had a son like Bill Mulder's; one that follow in his footsteps. He then shoots his son.

In 4th season's Demons, it is suggested that CSM is Samantha Mulder's biological father. This is why, at the last minute, Bill Mulder chose to giver her to the aliens instead of Mulder, who had been his first choice. In the 2nd part of the 7th season premiere The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati, CSM tells Mulder that he is also Mulder's father. In 9th season's William, it is discovered that Jeffrey Spender shares DNA with Mulder, which suggests they are related. In The Truth, Spender states that he and Mulder are half-brothers; Mulder's mother had an affair with Spender's father.

CSM always kept Mulder alive, so he said, because he was valuable to the project. Sometimes, CSM actually helped Mulder, but mostly, he was Mulder's enemy.

In 7th season's En Ami, it appears that CSM may have a crush on Scully. The CSM tells Scully he can help her find information that contains the cure to all diseases. He switches the disks, giving Scully a blank one, intending to use the real information to cure himself from his cerebral inflamination- caused from the operation that was done to transfer genetic material from Mulder to him in The Sixth Extinction- that he is dying from. Lonely, and with nothing to live for, he, instead, throws the disk into the lake, ruining the chances for curing himself and anyone else.

In Redux II, the CSM is shot. In Requiem, he is pushed down the stairs by Alex Krycek and Marita Covarrubias. He manages to live through them. In The Truth, Mulder and Scully meet him again in a desert. He finally is killed when the helicopters bomb the old Native American housing he is in.
