Turkish M1893/38 Mauser
8x57JS
I got this rifle
entirely by mistake. a few years back, when SOG was selling turks for
$19.99 each, as is, I thought I'd take a chance and bought 5. These were
advertised as Model 1938 Turk Mausers. Four of them were, in various
states of disrepair and functionality.
The fifth one was caked in cosmoline,
and as I cleaned it I noticed two things immediately. The thicker magazine
floorplate and then the notched receiver ring for clearance of the longer
8x57 round (the original caliber of this rifle was 7.65x54, a shorter
round.
The bluing turned out to be near
perfect (97-98$) and the SN on all the parts I could find were matching.
This was converted in 1934.

Notice the
characteristic thickness of the magazine floor plate (right).
The receiver below shows the arabic
text and the tab (with crescent) on the bolt stop release. |
