Timekeeping

"Time is a convenient explanation for why things do not happen all at once."

- Krotti Forkbeard, Dwarven Adventurer

A day in Taranche is reckoned from one sunrise to the next. To a Taranchean, "tomorrow" doesn'’t start until the sun is up. "When a black thread can be told from a white thread" is when the day officially begins. Hours, minutes, and seconds are rarely kept track of.  Most people consider there to be only five periods in a day: morning, highsun, evening, sunebb, and night. "Midnight" is an imprecise time, and is usually held to occur some five or six hours after sundown.

The Imperial Calendar

The following calendar is in common-enough use to apply to all regions within Taranche. The year consists 360 days: twelve months of thirty days apiece. Further, months are then subdivided into three weeks of ten days apiece.  The months of the year are listed below, with their corresponding Gregorian calendar months.  The first day of the year is reckoned as the first day of Greengrass.

Imperial Month Gregorian Month Imperial Month Gregorian Month
Greengrass April Harvest October
Stormhome May Goldenleaf November
Shieldmoon June Firetide December
Summertide July Icinglace January
Summer August Deepwinter February
Summerset September Melting March

The Numbering of Years

Although the months that make up a year are standardized, the system of numbering years varies from place to place. Usually, years are numbered from an event of great political or religious significance. Each nation or region has cultures with unique histories and thus different reckonings, usually based on the reign of a dynasty or the current monarch, or since the founding of the country or city.  Most small towns use the system of the nearest kingdom or city-state. Some nations use the system of their neighbors if they share a cultural heritage. The result is a hodgepodge of overlapping numbers that serve to confuse the ordinary person and frustrate the historian.

Imperial Reckoning (IR) is the default manner of numbering the years for all games.  It is taken from the year that the Taoric Empire was founded. To determine the current game year, add 3150 to the current real world year.  (This means that the current game year is 5153 IR.)
