"You
would be amazed at the number of different types of living
things out there, sir. Far more than you see on your
little farm."
-- Aescwig
Browncloak, High Priest of Urgulanus
Most animals of
Taranche are similar, if not identical, to the same sort of
animal found on earth. In addition, Taranche is home to
some unique types of creature, both normal and otherwise.
I've divided up the various creatures of Taranche into several
different categories, listed on the left. I know that plants
aren't animals, but I am listing the new
plants in the Bestiary anyway. Likewise, diseases aren't
generally thought of as animals, but this seemed to be the best
place to put them.
The bestiary lists
mundane creatures. While some of them can be used as
"monsters", for the most part they do not require a writeup as
such because of their basic mundanity (when you reduce a Chayk
bear to its essential core, for example, you're just talking
about a grizzly.) Likewise, creatures considered
"monsters" are not listed in the bestiary because of their
unusual nature.
There are some
important changes to how people view animals, however:
-
Nearly every
sentient race found on the land uses domesticated dogs, in many
varieties and types.
-
Horses have been
bred and shaped by their environment, and nearly every
civilization uses them to some extent. There are some
civilizations (specifically the ones living in the deep jungle
and on the outskirts of the Emerald Forest) who do not use
horses but rather use a large, domesticated reptile called a
t'shrandi, similar to a triceratops that was shrunk to the size
of a draft horse.
-
Exactly which
animals are considered food or not differs from people to
people. A Barind, for example, wouldn't hesitate to eat a
crab, while a Rostok would stare in disgusted horror at the
Barind while he did so. On the other hand, any Rostok with
culinary skills has three or four recipes for horse meat in his
head, a fact that a Barind would find rather disturbing.
And both Rostok and Barind would find the Taoric taste for frog
legs and snails to be bizarre.
-
Housecats in the
modern sense do not
exist, as small hunting cats were never domesticated.
-
Pretty much all of the standard farm
animals exist, in various breeds.
-
The common folk of
the Taranche tend to classify animals in three ways: as
household beasts (dogs, cattle, chickens, and so on), as vermin
(rats, mice, squirrels, and so on), or as dangerous threats
(wolves, tigers, etc.). The idea of the nobility and
grandeur of the animal kingdom has not caught on with anyone but
a few select priesthoods.
