William Jasper was a Confederate soldier. He entered the CSA in 1862 as aspouse: Tarter, Mary Polly Moore (1851 - 1926)
private in Company E, 22nd Alabama Infantry, in the Army of Tennessee under
Cols. Zach C Deas, Harry Toulmin, John C Marrast, and B R Hart. Their first
battle was Shiloh where William Jasper was severly wounded. In December 1862,
he fought at Murfreesboro and in 1863 he participated in the Tullahoma
campaign, the retreat to Chattanooga, the maneuvers through north Georgia, the
great battle of Chickamauga, the investment of Chattanooga, and the disastrous
battle of the Missionary Ridge on November 25 in which he was among the
captured. After being a prisoner of war for 16 months at Rock Island,
Illinois, he was exchanged in March, 1865. He was granted a furlough before
the war ended while his regiment was in North Carolina surrendering to Joseph E
Johnson. He was wounded 3 times. In 1868, he went to Texas and settled in Hill
County and engaged in farming. He lived in Itasca, Texas, as a proprietor of a
cotton gin as well as a stockholder in a cotton mill. Referenced from "The

Mountain near Rock Hill, South Carolina. He lived in Rowan NC 1761;
Botecourt VA in 1770; Greene TN 1783; Madison Ala 1807.Will was written in 1812, probated MAdison COunty Alabama Book D pg 77 in Oct
1817.Known as Martin Sr.

The 1870 Census lists ROBERT age 16 b MS, MATTHEW age 11 b MS, and additional

the administratrix of estate, General Index to Estates, Vol D, 1870-1885, Yalo-
busha Co MS, Estate No 1148.On this basis, children SERENA, NANCY, and W__ were born from UNKNOWN first
wife. Children MARY A, THOMAS, ROBERT W, MATTHEW JR, EMMA, HENRY D, LEWIS,
and SITHIA(TOBITHA) were born from K JANE. This is not fully verified presently.MATTHEW RICHARDS is on the Tax Roll, Yalobusha Co MS in 1857 and 1869.
Deed Record, Book 3, p259, 9 Mar 1860 lists M RICHARDS purchased land from
J S BRUNSON.DEATH:7 May 1871. Listed in above ref Gen Index to Estates. After his death
his wife K JANE petitioned the Chancery Court to be allowed to sell his
personal property to pay debts. It was done on 27 Sep 1871. He probably is
buried in Salem Cemetery, Yalobusha Co, MS near Water Valley. Go W from hosp
on Hwy 35 for 5.3 mi to Sylva Rena Church. Take first road to right and go 1 mi
to cemetery. Recorded by John and Vivian Purdy. Two graves are recorded: MAT
RICHARDS(funeral home marker) and THOMAS RICHARDS - 11 Mar 1820-24 Feb 1905.
This is probably his brother, THOMAS, who married ANN ELIZ GIBBS, 6 Aug 1857,
as listed in Yalobusha Co MS Marriages.Mrs K J RICHARDS and a ROBERT RICHARDS are listed in 1873 Yalobusha Co MS Tax
Rolls.The 1889 Tax Rolls, Yalobusha Co MS list MAT RICHARDS [JR], W E RICHARDS, M K

Price Albert Prewett), the Richard family came from New Orleans
to Water Valley MS with many slaves. Matthew bought land from the Indians, and
this land is now flooded by the Enid Dam. The Richards then moved on to
Tennessee.According to Magdalene Hamner, daughter of Mildred Prewett, my great aunt, the
Richards were a wealthy family with lots of slaves who came to Yalobusha County
from New Orleans.Bill Ward, the Yalobusha County coordinator for the MSGenWeb Project, said
there is a headstone in the Salem Cemetery outside of West Valley, MS, with the
