Unfortunately the first half HCS seemed to leave the gymnasium and a tired, uncoordinated team took their place for the worst third quarter (19-6) in HCS recent history. Unfortunately for the Patriots a reinvigorated Warrior team took the floor for the second half, reminiscent of AVC teams of old. Drew Mercer was left unguarded and got his patented three point shot off successfully. Peter Kudrle was able to drive to the hole seemingly unguarded. Justin Nunes stopped taking his inept first half shots and started looking like an Agape MVP with solid followups under the basket. Todd Kinnard played way better than he ever has against HCS and HCS was not ready for that. The big men could not stop Nunes and Kinnard who both ended up in double digits for the night with 18 and 15 points respectively. In fact it seemed as if HCS had not assigned anyone to guard Kinnard who has obviously worked hard developing his big man skills. As for HCS, any semblance of team effort was absent. They only had 3 assists on the night. Josh Hamilton had 20 points but took many low percentage shots. He shot 33% from the floor and 20% from the three point line. He did however score a career high 9 rebounds. His assist to turnover ratio was -4. 6'5" Nate Glass had no points and only 2 rebounds although he was the tallest player out there. After his best game of the season against Joshua Springs, this was a disappointment. Soph Mike Petersen was injured early in the game and never really recovered to perform his normal game. He had 3 points, six rebounds and an unusual 2 turnovers. Billy Hague had decent stats but his defense was off although he did get four steals mostly in the frantic final minutes. Trevor Wagstaffe played a smart first half but did not seem to have answers in the second half in leading the offense. The stats for HCS are not terrible and certainly don't show the complete lackluster second half performance. Even in the final two minutes, it seemed only Hague and Wagstaffe showed any desire to play extraordinary and still try to win. This team needs a lot of work in learning how to play from behind in the fourth quarter. Coaching was not any better than the players performance. But then neither Chad Bickley nor Lester Simpson have ever coached well against Rick Huff in the last couple of years. Quite honestly, I would have rather seen Sean Bayer, Matt Boesch and Sam Sullivan in the third quarter than the first team. It is hard to imagine them doing worse than the third quarter team that did play or at least occupied the floor. They may have done better or the first team may have reignited their competitive desires while on the bench. This disasterous game may have begun in the making in the Thursday night practice and hopefully it ended at the final whistle. Now HCS must quickly regroup and get ready for a strong and dangerous Antelope Valley Christian on Tuesday in their cavernous gym and stop the Eagles' three transfers from Highland High along with All CIF guard Jeremiah Nurse and J'whon James. HCS drops to third place in the Agape while Apple Valley takes sole possession of first place and Antelope Valley Christian takes sole possession of second place. But now the HCS supporters will find out if this year's Patriots have championship hearts or not.
