The Unleaded Fuel Debate - Has Bureaucracy Gone Mad? The Gullible Public:

The following section is basically some copies of issues which 'affect' us all, some plausible but most laughable, and unfortunately enacted into law, thrust upon us unnecessarily by a misguided minority bleating into the ears of equally ignorant Government members !

oils? fuels? greenhouse effects? do-gooders !!

Electric cars I hear some say? Well seeing as most Power Stations are Coal Fired, wouldn't they be only be transferring the problem of pollution to the power Station? A snippet from a well known news source gave the following report in regards to Pollution /  Greenhouse effects here in Australia as at 16/04/2001 .

Aussie Greenhouse Gas on the Rise

Growth in greenhouse gas emissions has blown out to 17.4 per cent since 1990, the latest snapshot of Australia's greenhouse performance shows.
Environment Minister Robert Hill said greenhouse gas emissions increased 1.1 per cent in 1999, an improvement on the 4.5 per cent growth recorded the previous year.
"Furthermore, the lower growth of 1.1 per cent was to a background of gross domestic product growth over the same period of 5.4 per cent, which shows that Australia is not decoupling carbon growth from economic growth," he said.
But emissions are 17.4 per cent higher than they were in 1990, despite a target under the Kyoto protocol to limit growth in greenhouse gas emissions to eight per cent above 1990 levels by 2008-2012.
Conservationists said the figures showed why Australia must keep its commitment to the Kyoto protocol, despite United States opposition.
Greens senator Bob Brown said emissions were still 50 per cent higher than the annual increase allowed under Kyoto.
"Australia has allowed the pollution rate to double the Kyoto standard in half the time available," he said.
"Environment Minister Hill's claim that the charts show there is a slowing in growth of Australia's emissions is like arguing against a speeding ticket on the basis that he had touched the brakes."
The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) said the slowing in growth was welcome but increases in emissions from transport and electricity were unacceptable.
"What these figures do show is that the Kyoto target is not that hard for Australia to achieve and that Australia would be mad to ditch it," said strategies director Michael Krockenberger.
Electricity generation accounted for 37 per cent of emissions, up 24.6 per cent since 1990, and transport 16 per cent, up 20.3 per cent over the same period.

Recharging their Electric Cars overnight  would place excessive loads on the Stations, who would then in turn have to burn more Coal to produce more Electricity, nasty circle isn't it?

GREENHOUSE GASES - BULLCRAP !!

Joseph Goebels* would be so very proud of the Greenies**.

They invented the doomsday scenario that the burning of fossil fuels will cause the whole planet to overheat.

They didn't need any definitive science...
They just simply constantly bombarded the media with spurious little titbits such as,
icebergs breaking off Antarctica and,
the shrinking snows of Kilimanjaro,
and the odd shrinking glacier,
unaccountable computer models,
and non corroborated ice cores.
AND THEY SUCKERED THE WHOLE WESTERN WORLD INTO BELIEVING IT.

Here is another doomsday scenario.
1,000,000,000 Indians and 1,200,000,000 Chinese are going to laugh in their white European Greenie faces and just ignore them.
China and India will simply let the poor white trash self destruct and will leave them far behind in the global economy.
The Planet will not overheat.
This century will belong to them.

Not since Chicken Little ran around yelling "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" have we had such a stupid lie thrust upon us as greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse theory is fundamentally flawed because it assumes that the earth's climate is stable when it isn't - it never has been - it has got hotter and colder all by itself over the millennia - sometimes quite rapidly. Fortunately for the Greenies the Earth is in a warming phase at present.

Also. It assumes that the level of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere will increase.
The level of Carbon Dioxide has and always will be determined by the Carbon Cycle, the natural balance between plants, which breathe it in and animals, which breathe it out.
This is a dynamic balance - it cannot be displaced.
Increasing carbon dioxide levels causes plants to flourish and re-absorb it [proven fact see references below].
There is no evidence that added carbon dioxide will persist for any significant length of time.

Put on soothsayers and fortune tellers by all means but don't dress them up as Scientists when they are not.
After their brilliant success predicting global climate, the Greenies should try the stock market and the futures market and even the odd horse race, it will pay for their political campaigns.

Real Scientists point out that nature produces far more greenhouse gases than we do.
Humans produce just six billion tonnes of greenhouse gases a year...

When the Mount Pinatubo volcano erupted, within just a few hours it had thrown into the atmosphere 30 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide - almost twice as much as all the factories, power plants and cars in the United States do in a whole year.

Oceans emit 90 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, every year.
Decaying plants throw up another 90 billion tonnes,

The atmosphere contains carbon dioxide in variable amounts, usually 3 to 4 parts per 10,000 - we are talking a very small increase in the total atmosphere here.
The reason CO
2 is such a tiny proportion of the atmosphere is because all the plants on the Earth love it - they just gobble it up immediately - they can't get enough of it .

About three quarters of the existing, natural, greenhouse effect is due to water vapour. Even if all other greenhouse gases were to disappear, we would still be left with over 98 percent of the current greenhouse effect. CO2 must be a minor factor.

The natural greenhouse effect is overwhelmed by convectional cooling.
Alone, the natural greenhouse effect would heat the earth to 75oC.
Convectional cooling actually reduces it to the existing 15oC.
CO
2 is a minor factor within a minor factor in the earth's temperature.

Satellite measurements actually show a slight cooling of the world's atmosphere — about -0.06°C per decade.
It is interesting to watch the fakers try to worm their way around that one!

Why are otherwise sensible, rational, intelligent people prepared to blindly accept that the earth is going to get hotter because a computer program predicts it ???
A COMPUTER PROGRAM ! well it must be true then!
Pig's Bum.
It is extremely ambitious to try to model the earth's climate itself, let alone try to include the biology and oceanography, of the whole planet in it as well!
Has anybody checked it ?
NO.
Can anybody check it ?
Probably not.
Does the computer program factor in the Carbon Cycle ?
NO.
Does the Carbon Cycle affect the level of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere ?
YES. [ It is the determinant ]
Does the computer program assume that the Earth's climate will otherwise remain stable
YES.
Is the Earth's climate otherwise stable ?
NO.

Don't wanna believe me ? - I'm not the only one.
Check these out - note the proper scientific references below to validate the assertions and the complete lack of vicious character assassination of dissenting opinion.

A little bit like the dilemma faced by the Australian Government back in the 80's in regards to an alternative fuel source for Australian vehicles . Although Europe and America amongst other Nations used Unleaded Fuel, and warned Australia of the dangers involved, higher incidences of child related Leukemia, Cancer in humans and animals, plus, by removing the lead from the fuel helped push the emitted gases further into our atmosphere, thus increasing the damaging effects of the dreaded Greenhouse effect . It has been argued to good effect, that the so-called dangerous levels of lead found in humans blood streams, were not so much directly caused by the effects of lead content in the fuel used by pre-'86 model vehicles, but in the paints used in most homes, schools and public buildings . Adding to this, at one stage most private homes had their water supply provided by the trusty Galvanized (Lead-Tin Soldered) Water tank, whereby water ran off of the corrugated roof, (painted in lead based paint) through the guttering and spouts (joined by lead/tin solder) into the (Lead-Tin Soldered) Water Tank, starting to get the picture ? Lead ! Australians were surrounded by it ! How many of our older citizens remember those little lead toy soldiers that young boys found so much fun to play with ? Today a lot of local councils are trying to encourage private home owners to reinstall the trusty Water Tank as an alternative water source so as to alleviate the burdens placed upon most local councils in regards to the supply of fresh drinking water, but with the fallouts today from heavy industries, who would want to drink untreated water ? Or do you Ever remember leaning against a building, whether it was at home or at school and getting a powder type substance which rubbed off on your skin or clothing ? A lot of Oxidized paint also contained lead, which is absorbed in through your skin, also each time you had that refreshing cold drink from the tank, you absorbed lead . I still know older people who when they visit the city bring their own "Fresh Tank Water" instead of drinking the yucky "Treated Town Water" . Any wonder Australians tested positive for such high lead levels in the build up to the introduction of Unleaded fuels ? My view ? I think I would much rather exit this planet with dulled senses from the effects of lead poisoning, then I would with my  full senses and suffering something like the effects of cancer, caused by the Unleaded fuel that was forced upon all Australians by an ignorant Government who once again was swayed the vocal bleatings of a misguided minority .

Sydney President Marco Pendelj thought that the following article would be of interest to the 'mechanical techno freaks' who comprise a large majority of the club. The article appeared in the 1994 issue of “Cough and Splutter” - it’s the monthly newsletter of the Antique Car Club of Albury-Wodonga, and is a report on the Dr David Warren Theory. Warren is a retired research scientist from the Department of Defence and was the Energy Resources advisor to the Victorian Government in the early mid/80’s when the unleaded petrol debate was gathering momentum.

HEALTH RISKS FROM UNLEADED PETROL

The History of Leaded Petrol.

The early car engines had a very low compression ratio and the reason for this was the available fuel. Once this compression started going past 5:1, pre-ignition became a problem. In the early 1920’s, Thomas Midgley discovered that platinum, silver and lead stopped knocking in the car engine, but was also soluble in petrol. With further research Midgley also found that a compound called lead tetraethyl was an ideal substance that not only stopped knocking in the car engine, but it also broke down into lead at upper cylinder temperatures. Midgley’s research raised the octane rating from 50 to 65 and with improvements at the refinery the octane during the 40’s and 50’s climbed to 80 and finally with further development, to 110 for aviation fuel.

The Green Debate.

During the 60’s and 70’s the call to clean up the atmosphere started to make the government quiver. “Clean up car exhausts” was the cry from the Green lobby. “Lead is poisoning our children and should be banned,” was some of the emotional material that caught the attention of the government and the public at large. It IS a fact that lead is a poison if absorbed by the body, but does that follow that the lead found in our bodies came from lead in petrol? Tests were carried all over the world to check the effects of lead emissions from car exhausts on humans. The German Government cut the level of lead from .4 to .15 grams per litre and after 5 years and discovered that there was no detectable reduction in blood levels despite the lead content in petrol being reduced by two thirds. In London a professor Lowthur of the university of London, pointed out that the lead that comes out of the car exhausts have been baked at 20CD - 3000 degrees centigrade (Like a House Brick) and is microscopically small. It does not get absorbed by the lungs and does not get dissolved in the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Dr Warren’s research showed that the lead in our blood came from eating or drinking it, and that the main sources were from soldered food cans, lead based paints and lead pipes. In fact research shows that blood levels were higher in country people who drank bore water, New Guinea Highlanders, and people on some remote islands (Where There Were No Cars) then those living in the heart of Melbourne. Despite the evidence the Greens used the fact that “Lead is a Poison,” therefore it must be bad as a way of Railroading the Government into introducing Unleaded petrol into Australia.

Enter Unleaded Petrol.

The real reason for the introduction of unleaded petrol was that catalytic converters were required on cars to get rid of nitric oxides, carbon monoxide and the unburnt petrol that came out of the cars exhausts, and the lead rendered catalytic converters useless. This was the reason other countries introduced unleaded petrol - we did it because we thought lead was a poison and we thought it was dangerous. The problem however, is that if lead is removed from petrol, what is going to be used in its place so that the octane level can be maintained? It was decided that benzene was the ‘best’ alternative. Benzene is a known carcinogen (Cancer Producing) until Dr Warrens said that unleaded petrol now appears to be so dangerous that under no circumstances should unleaded petrol to be used on any car not fitted with a catalytic converter. It should not be used in your motor mower, chainsaw, whipper snipper or your outboard motor, and it should never be used to wash parts. Also avoid getting unleaded petrol on your hands and avoid fumes when refueling. And as the catalytic converter does not work until it reaches 400 degrees centigrade, avoid breathing the fumes from the exhaust of a cold engine. In Britain the risk is so clear that the National Society of Clean Air has removed it’s support for unleaded petrol. In the USA all new cars are fitted with anti fume filters so that the fumes emitted whilst refueling are kept away from the person doing the refueling. It has also been noted that the advertisements (Featuring Gary Sweet) urging people with pre ’86 vehicles to use unleaded petrol where possible have suddenly disappeared from our TV screens. And it seems that the cost of producing unleaded fuel is significantly more because it uses more oil (And creates more pollution) and benzene is derived from oil.

The Alarming thing about the introduction of unleaded petrol in Australia is that we have replaced an almost harmless substance like lead in our petrol with a hazard like benzene. And it has been done because a vocal minority stole the agenda, and through misinformation, have saddled us with a potential time bomb that could increase cancer rates in Australia.

Footnote:

In a most timely fashion, the May 1995 issue of Choice Magazine, addresses the problem of ‘Lowering lead Levels’. The author notes that a very small fraction of lead intake by children is inhaled from the air, from dust, soil, paint and, to a lesser extent, food and water being the main sources.

It is also noted that, because of our lower octane ratings, extra benzene is necessary, and that both lead and benzene have been reduced in recent years. Unleaded petrol in Oz contains the same amount of benzene as leaded - less than 3% - and the lead levels are continuing to decrease.

For these leaded petrol users who are concerned about lowering emissions, Choice suggests that Shell’s new ‘Half Lead’ is the sensible selection.

(Our thanks to Chris Ruggles from the Australian Consumers Association for allowing us to quote from their article;

I feel that there is a lot more to be learned about cleaning up our air. We are often fed misinformation by both sides of the argument. It is very difficult to take a plea for minimization of car/bike exhausts seriously when you look at the exhaust emissions of diesel trucks and buses, many of them Government owned.

I think if they started with the obvious and cleaned up the heavy vehicle act, in a fair manner to the private operator, things might just start to improve. John M.

Steam Powered ~ An Alternative?

Although steam has been around for many many years, as long as the motor car in fact, why didn't research and development supercede any need to switch to the various Petrol's we have become so dependent on ? The following website will give a small insight into one Australian who has more than dabbled with a few steam engines over the years . Who knows, maybe if someone actually took the supposed green house effects seriously, Like tell me if we had stayed with animal power [ AKA Methane producer ] Wood stoves and backyard Incinerators [ Smoke smoke & more smoke ] tell me honestly how the dreaded Green House levels would rate today ? Anyways,  maybe someone will take this idea seriously and produce a relatively cheap steam engine that can be transplanted into various early model cars instead of stinging the public by having to purchase a totally new car ! But check it out, after all the real question and answers are all about ~ "Alternative Fuels?"
