"BADGirl" - Holden Gemini Page 3

"BADGirl "

            Gemini

"BADGirl" Was Born.

We were toying around with Ideas for a name for my Gemini, some were silly and others ludicrous, but the birth of the 90's was the uprising for some Top Show Quality 4 Cylinder cars and Magazines, enough to get the Blood Boiling in those of us who actually liked the Small Car scene . As most Show Cars had a name people could remember, so I wanted a name that could be remembered . As luck would have it a few friends were over and we were discussing another friend Stuie, who was in the business of making signs, but also had a real talent for knocking up some really cool stickers . He could design something from scratch on his computer and knock it out on his Vinyl Cutter in a flash . The craze back in the late 80's and early 90's was BadBoy stickers . While having a couple of drinks or three, and toying around with the concept of catchy stickers, Brian suggested that it sucked that all the stickers were aimed at the guy's, who all considered themselves BadBoy's just because they owned a HOT4, and that there were Girl's who also owned cars, their OWN Cars! So why didn't they make BADGirl stickers ?

So as soon as our friends left Brian got stuck into designing the Layout and Design of the stickers, we decided on stickers in the event that if I ever sold the car, it would be easier and more attractive to just peel the stickers off instead of having to remove any paint if they were airbrushed on, so that was it .

The Name Had Been Decided On, "BADGirl" It Was !

Holden Gemini SL Sprint (Isuzu).

The SL Sprint option was an unusual choice as this is the only SL Sprint I, or my friends have seen, the normal choice being the SLX as an option base . This Dealer Option added a 3 Piece Rear spoiler, Front spoiler, and Guard flares, all mounted by internal bolts, plus Sprint striping (Optional) over the original SL / SLX. Depending on the year and the model level selected, the striping differed, and some elected to do away with the striping altogether . After that it was up to the owner to choose what style of Mag wheels etc to add .

In My Area, the Original SL Gemini's with the 5 Speed were selling for $5,999 on road (On special), and the SLX 5 speed was $7,853, (Brian Bought a 5 speed SLX Brand New in June '82) but the Sprint option added something like $2,600 to the on road price of the car . Any wonder Sprint clones popped up everywhere after the Fibreglass shops managed to get their hands on a body kit, although the after market kit differed in the rear Spoiler, which was shorter in the sides and did not finish under the rear pillar vents .

With the Sprint's, all mechanicals were left stock, the only way to buy a performance Gemini was to import a Japanese ZZ/R or buy a locally assembled CDT Gemini which had the larger engines, Webber's or a turbo as options, but the prices of these were out of reach of the average Gemini fanatic . Holden offered a ZZ/Z Gemini in the TG range but these were poorly accepted as they too were left with the standard 1600 cc engine, and what was to be considered the Ugliest Mag Wheels ever offered by Holden, 'White' (Commodore SL/E style) 13 inch razor blade wheels . Ugly! These also had ZZ/Z Stickers, Guard extensions (Molded Mud flaps), Rear spoiler, Front Bib spoiler and Black Rubber Wind Splitters on the Front mud guards . Holden also fitted the ZZ/Z with what they considered sporty, Hounds tooth Interior, (Black with a White Fleck through it) but at least they had the good sense to fit the Sports Instrument dashboard !

A Picture of a friend's TX Gemini that my Boyfriend had built for him using an after market Sprint kit. Holden released Rear Wheel Drive Gemini's here in Australia in TX - TC - TD - TE - TF and TG Models. Japanese versions included the ZZ/R Sports model, and here, CDT (Country Dealer Team) produced some real Hotties in the TE model which enthused the youth market. A few dealers got in on the act and Kitted up standard Gemini's to 'Look Like' their Sporty equivalents at a far greater saving! So the Sprints were born, and after a while nearly every Fibreglass shop had their hands on the kits so Backyard Sprints began popping up all over the place.

Buying My Gemini.

I bought my Holden Gemini back in 1988 . It was in Ok condition, although the Front spoiler had copped a bit of a hiding . As far as I could see, it was a Gemini Sprint, Original 'Baby Pooh' Yellow, Velour interior, with a 1600 cc motor fitted with Twin Side Draught 45mm Webber carbies, Extractors and a Mild 30/70 reground camshaft . The Gemini was advertised in the Sunday paper as a 'Show Car' . The asking price was something like $5,500 but in all honesty, the $4,500 I paid was too much . I was also given a box of receipts with the car, and although there was not enough receipts for all that had been done, what was there amounted to over $15,000 . I suppose it made $4,500 look like well spent money, until at a later stage we decided to dig a little deeper than the skin, well they do say "Beauty is Only Skin Deep" .

The Trip Home.

The trip home was a little on the exciting side when the Webber's stuck on full throttle while driving through a roundabout, but this was later easily fixed by relocating the linkages . I finally headed off with the stack of paper work supplied with the Gemini to investigate what I had got myself into .

So, after the roundabout incident and my way home, I stopped at our local corner store for some fuel and a cold drink . The store owner, a lovely little old Greek lady, came to look at my new pride and joy and immediately exclaimed "Ooh, a Greek car"? She explained it was a Greek persons car because the interior was upholstered in the same material favored by most Greek people, who all had their lounges upholstered in the same . "Very nice" .

"Lovely", so home I went to start piecing together all the receipts and paper work .

The nick name of

"WoGGirl"

instead of

"BADGirl"

nearly became reality at this point .

The Previous Owner.

The Gemini was purchased by its previous owner, Enrico and his Girlfriend, in 1982 as a Dealer Optioned 1982 SL Gemini Sprint with 5 speed transmission . He fitted the Mag Wheels, Gold Centered 6 Spoke 13 inch x 7 inch Delta Phantoms with 205 x 65 x 13 inch Radial tyres which filled the Sprint flares nicely . Maybe the Original Dashboard in Chocolate Brown and Caramel inspired his choice of Interior colors as he had the Full interior Re-upholstered in a combination of Chocolate Brown, Caramel and Cream velour, with Chocolate Brown, white, Tan and Cream Vinyl with the Sprint stripes (Black and Red) from the Doors Replicated into the Door trims . The Velour covered the Original seats, Headlining, Sun visors, Door trims, Door and Window Pillars and Parcel shelf .

Enrico also had fitted, a ZZ/Z Sports Instrument panel which contained Speedo / Tachometer / Fuel / Oil pressure / Volts and Water temperature gauges over the standard Speedo / Vacuum / Fuel and Water temperature gauges, Cool! Plus a SAAS Gold anodized 4 spoke sports steering wheel which Blinded me every time I turned a corner while the sun was out, this was soon turfed in favor of a 3 Spoke Matt Black SAAS Sports Steering Wheel with cool thumb grips .

Apparently the motor under went a few rebuilds while in Enrico's possession, the first being a Turbo'd 1600 cc. As the story goes, it saw its fair share of Street racing in some of Brisbane's more popular outer suburbs, laying claim (suppose you had to be there, a couple of acquaintance's said they were so....) to beating Victor Bray when Victor still ran his '57 Chev as a Full Steel Bodied Streeter with a Warm 350 Chev, before going on to become a Strip only World Famous Drag Racer . I suppose we all have to start somewhere .

The Second build saw the Webber's fitted as the turbo was a little on the wild side for Enrico's girlfriend, who it is said kissed the bum of a driver in front of her, then refused to drive it till he made it more Drivable and User friendly . As I later discovered he attained this by shaving something like a 1/4 inch off of the head to bring the Compression ratio back up a little (200Psi on all cylinders on our first 1800 SOHC build) to suit the new Camshaft and Side Draught Webber combination . This is where the Phase II Ford Bonnet scoop also came into the equation as the Webber's with their Adaptors lifted the Air filters just above Bonnet height, thus needing the Scoop to cover these from the prying eyes of the Law while supplying the Carb's with much needed cool fresh air . Enrico apparently lost interest in the car with this setup so the decision was made to put it up for sale, Enter Me !

Our First Show.

The First Showing, Who Were We Trying to Kid?

My First Showing of the Gemini was in 1988 at Brisbane at a Gemini Jamboree, a Weekend Show which attracted many Entrants from Queensland and Interstate . This was while I was a member of the "Ipswich Holden Gemini Club", "Ipswich City Street Machine Club" and the "Queensland Chrysler Association" and at the time My Boyfriend was Building a Wild Custom V8 VG Valiant Coupe which he later gave up to aid in the Building of "BADGirl", how many Guy's would do that for their Girlfriend's ? This Show was more of a look see than a serious attempt at showing my Car, although I was stoked with what I had purchased, the Car was less than Ordinary compared to some that attended, mine was a PIG !

Now! Apparently Gemini Jamboree's were notorious for attracting rain, this weekend no different, and the many Gemini Jamboree videos show proof of how Amphibious Gemini owners really could be. The Weekend Shows also included Raincoats, Hats, Gum boots, Tarps and Tents, and watching some of the Guy's and Gal's Detailing their cars, I was wondering if Snorkels should have been Compulsory . Water sports seemed to be a part of Gemini Jamboree Weekends, with nearly all Competitors taking part, Cricket and Tug-a-war taking on comical outcomes where it did not really matter who won, everyone ended up as muddy and wet in the sometimes foot deep or more bog that was created . These Jamboree's were the early beginnings of what is now today's Four cylinder and Rotary shows . The Gemini guy's invited the VW guy's who in turn took up the running of the Jamborees and invited the Rotary guy's to create a great weekend for all small car enthusiasts who were previously shunned by the run of the mill Street Machiner's (Or One Eyed Wanker's?) Who dismissed all Small Cars as 'Toys' or more commonly, 'Shit Boxes' ! This Transformation Benefited All Small Car Owners by Uniting the 4 Cylinder / Rotary Movement .

For this Show, I made a few Subtle changes to the Gemini, Partially Blacking out around the Door handles, Door Window frames, Sill panels, Bonnet scoop inlet, and under the Flares, while removing a Multitude of stickers from the Bodywork, plus a General Tidy up and Detail . Although We only turned up for the Actual Show 'n' Shine, (I think Show 'n' Chamois was closer) and Never Won a Trophy, We got the Bug to Build the Gemini into a 'Street Driven Show Car' . A 'Trailer Chauffeured Show Pony' was never on the cards, What Use is a Bag Full of Pretty Marbles if You Are Never Going to Play With Them ? The Gemini was planned as a Daily Driver, Was Used Daily to take the Kid's To and From School, do the Shopping, and Drive To and From Any Show 'n' Shine . And This I Achieved, I even went into town to do Laps on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights, This Car was most Definitely "Driven not Hidden" As the Windscreen Sticker Showed, and totally "100% Street Driven" as the Boot Sticker Proudly Displayed for All to See. Over the next couple of years I concentrated on improving things like Suspension, Cooling system, Fuel system and Carb's, Plus Building a Very Tuff 1800 SOHC Motor . Not to mention just Driving and Enjoying My Car! Then around 1990 it was the Body's turn for some Attention, And So The Fun Began .
