Mountain Boar: Bred
for use as a pack animal and riding beast by the Khazak, the
mountain boar has the same stats as a warthog, but is larger and
more docile. They are usually three feet tall at the
shoulder, can grow to a length of almost five feet, and can
weigh as much as 250 pounds. Mountain boards are usually
gray, white, or dappled white and black. They are
sure-footed, trustworthy as an average housedog, and are kept in
the same esteem by the dwarves as Barind or Taors keep their
horses.
Reikh'irud: A large
type of spider native to the various deserts of the east, the
reikh'irud (the name is Kulra'ami for "hidden assassin") hunts
by burrowing into the sand and leaping out at its prey from
surprise. They are very aggressive, and will leap to
attack and kill anything that wanders by its burrow, even those
creatures that are too large for it to kill (the spider has been
known to strike at passing humans, cattle, jackals, birds, and
just about anything else). It has rusty-brown "fur", thick
legs, and large red fangs that are quite easily visible.
The reikh'irud ususally measures between three to five inches
across, though an individual eight inches across was once
captured and kept as a "pet" by the Prince of Chadish'nar.
The bite of the reikh'irud, while excruciatingly painful, is
almost always non-fatal.
Sandbird: The sandbird is 35
centimeters in length. It is a rounded short-legged bird
that has a yellowish brown color to the body,
mainly found throughout the Kolamar Desert and
Burning Plain.
Sandbirds spend much of their time on the ground. When there is
danger they will flatten out and not move using camouflage to
hide. If that does not work, sandbirds will take to the air and
fly quickly away.
Skyrunner: Skyrunners appear to be
large thin squirrels with broad, flat heads and long fur. They
can be tamed and are sometimes found as pets or as the familiar
of a wizard or sorcerer. Unlike squirrels, they are cursorial
hunters, eating not only plant matter but also insects, worms,
grubs, and the like. They are non-aggressive, and flee quickly
when threatened. Skyrunners live in small groups, but hunt and
forage individually as do squirrels. They live most of their
lives at the top of trees, but can be found in lower branches
and sometimes on the ground. Skyrunners live in distinctive
nests. These nests are hollow spheres with a single entrance
which are skillfully woven together by the skyrunners out of
natural materials (twigs, leaves, bark, and grass).
Sunburst Treespider:
This species is named both for its color (a brilliant
golden-yellow) and its native habitat: the thick jungle
canopy. One of the largest types of natural spiders (as
opposed to the monstrous giant spiders), individuals can measure
up to 2 feet across. It is a quick, agile jumping spider
that hunts birds, small mammals, reptiles, and even other
sunbursts. They are not overly aggressive to creatures
that it cannot safely hunt, and is not known for attacking
humans who do not molest it. The bite of a sunburst is
painful and venomous. A person who is bitten will die, slowly and in great
pain, over the course of three days.
Tavern Hummingbird: The tavern hummingbird is similar in
nearly every way to other hummingbirds, and are just as fast and
colorful as their wild cousins. Rather than subsist on the
nectar of flowers, tavern hummingbirds live on alcohol.
Nearly every tavern and in in the Heartlands and the central
EasterSea Coast contains at least one family of hummingbirds.
They are generally tolerated as attractive nuisances as they
flit about, trying to steal nips of this or that drink.
Occasionally, you find these small birds as familiars to
wizards.
Treewolf: The
treewolf is a small predator that, as you might expect, spends
most of its life hunting in the canopy of trees. It is a
fur-covered mammal resembling a tailless racoon, with mottled
brown and black fur, bright eyes and a bushy tail. It is about
three foot long from nose to tail and weighs 15 pounds. Tree
wolves have a distinctive bark which is a short, sharp "hoot"
sound. Treewolves are able to move through tree branches
very quickly and with astounding stealth. They use this to their
advantage when hunting high in the trees.
Like squirrels, treewolves feel safest in the
trees. When on the ground, they are vulnerable and jittery. They
are always on the lookout for hawks and eagles which sometimes
make a meal of them. Treewolves will run from a fight if they
feel outmatched, and will also run from fire or loud noises.
Normally, tree wolves pose no threat to people.
Tree wolves hunt anything in the trees that are
smaller than them (squirrels, rodents, spiders, birds, insects,
grubs) and supplement this with berries and bird's eggs. The
tree wolf is a marsupial mammal and raises its young in a
stomach pouch. A female will typically have a litter of 2-4 cubs
once every five years.
T'shrandi:
The t'shrandi is an herbivorous repile that greatly resembles a
miniature triceratops. It is used as a pack animal by the
tribesmen within the Emerald Forest and in the lands surrounding
that great jungle. T'shrandi are also used as meat
animals.
T'shrandi stand five
feet at the shoulder, and can carry comparable loads as a draft
horse. Its horns are mostly for decoration, though they
can be used as weapons in the rare event that this timid beast
actually stands and fights. They are easily domesticated,
and loyal to their owners.
