Game Review

Hesperia Christian opened their 2004 playoff quest with a convincing but hard fought 63-49 victory over #7 ranked Boron. A large visiting crowd from Boron and Bobcat star Robert Hughes had to be stopped to win this one and both were accomplished. A lot of credit must go to the Patriot big men for their defensive effortr against Hughes who was held to 20 points. HCS also kept all other Bobcat players under their season averages. Coach Dobyns again developed a solid game plan to defeat Boron and the team executed it to near perfection.

HCS star senior Josh hamilton was heavily guarded as he will be for the remainder of the season but came through getting his season average of 23 points. Hamilton also led the team in rebounds with 9. HCS' sixth man, Zach Howard really was a key to the win against Boron getting 14 points and playing very creditable defense. Billy Hague and Trevor Wagstaffe did a good job controlling the team on the floor for Caoch Dobyns. Mike Petersen and Nate Glass devoted their efforts to rebounding and keeping Hughes under control and were very successful.

HCS only got 30 boards but against a power team like Boron that is a good stat. Most impressive was shooting 75% from the charity line. HCS also kept their turnovers under control getting only 10 this game. HCS also was able to jump out to an early lead and fight off the famous Boron surges to keep the victory.

HCS is now 18-7 (8-2) (1-0) and will travel to Long Beach City College on Tuesday to play the number four seed St Anthony in the Div VAA quarterfinals. Boron finished the season 18-4. HCS is one of only two league champions left in the tournament along with Hillcrest Christian.

Game Preview
Hesperia Christian opens their bid to get to Loyola Marymount against Boron 56-47 winner of a first round game against Liberty Christian. HCS finished the season in a tie for the Agape League title with Antelope Valley Christian and Apple Valley Christian with a 8-2 league record. Boron finished in a tie with Silver Valley in the Desert Mountain League with a 9-1 record. HCS is ranked #6 and Boron is ranked #7 in the last CIF Div VAA Poll.

Boron has one big star and a team of solid players. #44 Robert Hughes, 6' 7" is averaging almost 20 points a game. He gets scoring support from Brant York and Mike Gelardo who get about ten points a game. James Smith is their leading assist maker (5 a game) and stealer (3 steals a game). The Bobcats go about two deep on their bench. Other than Hughes, Boron has balanced scoring among their remaining players.

HCS is on their longest winning streak of the season and playing their best ball of the year. Josh Hamilton is the number 11 scorer in Socal and #2 scorer in San Bernardino County. His shot selection is greatly improved. Sean Bayer has made tremendous improvement in his game and is learning to become a dominant presence in the paint. Billy Hague continues to be a great defender and leads the team in steals with over 80 this season. Loren Barton has been able to use the week layoff to repair his knee. He was critical in the win against Antelope Valley Christian, playing 6 minutes and scoring an amazing 19 points. The Patriots are averaging 71 points a game right now (Boron averages 64 points per game).

Now the Patriots must pick up their game even more. The second season allows no defeats or you go home. HCS has a tough road to get to the finals and it will require a super effort on their part. But no other team with the exception of Rolling Hills Prep could handle such a playoff schedule. If every HCS player plays to his capablility, HCS can win this game.
