Game Review

Hesperia Christian played St Anthony, the number four seed at Long Beach City College and lost 51-46. HCS opened with one of the best playoff quarters in four years jumping out to a 16-5 lead. However, the Patriots followed this with one of the worst quarters in HCS history losing 12-3. St Anthony's coaching staff decided to slow it up and not play HCS style basketball. They burned up close to 35 seconds every possession. It pulled HCS out of their game and quite honestly, they never were able to recover. Overall, HCS got only 20 rebounds all night. No player played well even Josh Hamilton with 25 points and Billy hague with 11 points. For Mike Petersen, Trevor Wagstaffe and Sean Bayer it was their worst games of the season, coming at just the wrong time. Certainly the loss of both Sam Sullivan and Loren Barton played a major role in the loss. Shooting only 3 free throws all night and missing 2 of them is a good indicator of some of what HCS did wrong. Coaching was not at its best this night either. In the second quarter the second string should have gone in as they could not have done worse than the first team. Perhaps like in the Grace Brethren game, they might have sparked a change in the game. And with about four minutes left in the game, HCS should have gone in to a desperation mode to try and recover and possibly win it. Despite my negativity and disappointment in the team's play in this game, it does not take away from the fact that it was a wonderful season with many exciting and fun moments. Ending the season for a third time going to the divisional quarterfinals is quite a feat which few teams have done. Ending up ranked 5th in all of Socal in Div VAA is a first for HCS and well deserved. It is particularly noteworthy in light of the fact that HCS has had three different coaches in the last three years. And the coaching staff has matured basketball-wise in great leaps despite the last game. Some great game plans and coaching got the Agape title, a first for HCS. Interestingly, if HCS had not lost those 2 games in a row to AVC and Antelope in the first half of the season, they would have remained ranked four and gotten the fourth seed and had St Anthony travelled to HCS, it would have been a different ending. But spilled milk can not be recovered. We must learn from the past season. The players must dedicate themselves to a strong work ethic in the summer, getting in the weight room so that our big men of 6'4" and 6' 5" look like they are that big and rebound like they own every gym they play in. The guards have got to work their shooting and dribbling skills even more to be able to play against the very best. And the coaches and AD must put together another challenging schedule avoiding the Lucerne Valley's and Peace in the Valley's of the world and going after the New Roads and RHP's of the world.

Game Preview
Hesperia Christian plays in th CIF Quarterfinals for the third straight year against the #4 seed, St Anthony of Long Beach. HCS finished the season in a tie for the Agape League title with Antelope Valley Christian and Apple Valley Christian with a 8-2 league record. St Anthony is an at large team from the Camino Real League. HCS is ranked #5 and St Anthony is ranked #4 in the last CIF Div VAA Poll.

Saint Anthony is 14-14 (5-5) (2-0) and finished third in the Camino Real League. Karl Dehesa and Jed Hernandez are their two top scorers averaging 14 ppg and 11 ppg respectively. Maurice Berry #5 is their center and Adrian Simien is their fast point guard. Saint Anthony loves to press and loves being pressed. The Saints love penetrating the paint. Berry and Dehesa are their top rebounders averaging 6 rebounds a piece every game.

HCS is on their longest winning streak of the season and playing their best ball of the year. Josh Hamilton is the number 11 scorer in Socal and #2 scorer in San Bernardino County. His shot selection is greatly improved. Sean Bayer has made tremendous improvement in his game and is learning to become a dominant presence in the paint. Billy Hague continues to be a great defender and leads the team in steals with over 80 this season. Loren Barton's knee makes him questionable to play against St Anthony. He was critical in the win against Antelope Valley Christian, playing 6 minutes and scoring an amazing 19 points. The Patriots are averaging 71 points a game right now (St Anthony averages 48 points per game).

Now the Patriots must pick up their game even more. The second season allows no defeats or you go home. HCS has a tough road to get to the finals and it will require a super effort on their part. But no other team with the exception of Rolling Hills Prep could handle such a playoff schedule. If every HCS player plays to his capability, HCS can win this game.
