In 1978, after Star Wars put a new face on science fiction, Glen A. Larson created a new TV series, Battlestar Galactica

Although it only lasted for one season, Battlestar Galactica enthralled viewers and captured fans with it's story of "a rag-tag fleet on a lonely quest. A shining planet, known as Earth" led by the lone surviving battlestar of a fleet destroyed by the evil Cylons. This fleet carries the last survivors of humanity, hunted by the Cylons, searching for Earth.

"Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive somewhere beyond the heavens..."

Although Battlestar Galactica itself only lasted for one season, there was a re-vamped version, set about 30 years later, where the Galactica finds the planet Earth. Galactica 1980, stripped of almost all the recognisable characters, lasted only nine episodes, and is not considered canon by some fans.

There are three videos available from Battlestar Galactica, the three part pilot episode which was made into a theatrically released film, titled "Battlestar Galactica"; "Mission Galactica", a condensed version of the two part episode "The Living Legend", and the single episode "Fire in Space"; and "Conquest of the Earth", a condensed version of the Galactica 1980 episodes "Galactica Disovers Earth, part 1" and the two parter, "The Night the Cylons Landed."

Then, in 2003 a new Battlestar Galactica miniseries was launched. In a lot of ways it was totally different from the old favourite (with significant changes such as Starbuck being a girl), yet the basic story remained the same. And despite loyal fans denouncing it and refusing to watch, the new BSG was enough of a hit that it was commissioned into a new series.
