STAR LIVES

Friday 12 July 2002 7.00 to 7.30 pm ITV1
This week's STAR LIVES tells the story of the man whose fans caused panic at airports and havoc outside hotels - David Cassidy.

David Cassidy went from TV hopeful to a star outselling both Elvis and the Beatles.

Those giving insights on the man who found fame in a TV family include his Partridge Family co-star Danny Bonaduce, producer Don Reo, theatre
impresario Bill Kenwright and singer Petula Clark.

The show also includes classic The Partridge Family footage, as well as home video footage and recent Las Vegas performances.

Says David: "Britain has been such a great place for me to come and work and live. When I was very, very young I hadn't broken in the UK, and the first time I came here I thought nobody would care.

"But I got off the aeroplane and saw all these cops and sirens gong off, and I thought, what's going on? I walked across this glass tube partition and there were thousands of people there screaming and I thought, this can't be; nobody knows me here!

"It's been a love affair for me. My father had a great love for Great Britain and the theatre."

David also shares how he scored the role in The Partridge Family, the show that launched him and made girls go weak at the knees.

"I was doing leads in dramatic TV shows at the time, and at the end of the television season, I was offered this half-hour situation comedy where I had six lines," he says. "It was called The Family Business. I called the manager, and said, I've got to be honest with you - I need the money to pay
the rent, but what am I doing?"

Says Danny Bonaduce: "He was stunningly pretty, there's no two ways about that, he was just gorgeous . The most handsome star of the day. He was also a loyal and decent guy."

David's wife, Sue Cassidy, tells the romantic story of how they got together - 15 years after they had first dated - and their 11-year-old son, Beau, surprises him with a visit.

David's father, Jack, was a hugely successful actor, and had won a Tony. David describes what it was like to first see him on Broadway when he was only three.

"I remember feeling a connection with him as a role model, and realising what he was doing, and wanting to do it so badly. I said to my mum and dad, 'This is what I want to do.' They said no, not until you graduate from school!"

David also talks about some tough times during the 1980s, when both his career and marriage were spiralling.

Meanwhile, theatre impresario Bill Kenwright tells why he chose David for Blood Brothers - the Broadway musical that re-launched his career.

You can go to www.tvshowsondvd.com to cast your vote to put the Partridge Family on DVD. Please remember to choose the option of season by season. This means they will put out the complete seasons in box set form. Be sure to register first. It's free & easy.
