and grandson of the late Chancellor Johnston of Newberry, SC, died in Richmond
on the 10th July in the 20th year of his age of a wound received in the bloody
battle near Gaines Farm on the 27th June 1862.

William nick named 'Billy'. Billy died in auto accident. He is buried with his
father, in the family plot. Also killed in the accident was Billies girl
friend, Linda Marie Bridgeman. After the accident, both families bought
adjoining plots so that the two could be buried near each other. They were not
married, but both were in their last year of High School, and may have done so
after graduation.
