1910: South Carolina: Single and residing at home.

1920: Kenneth is single, living alone and working in a garage. He listed
the birth place of his parents as South Carolina.

1921: Marriage: at the Congregational Church, West Palm Beach, Fl, by Rev. C.H.
Pettibone, with the minister's wife and Kenneth's brother Yancy as witness.

Ken and wife Alice Corrine resided at 5270 Pennock Point Rd., Jupiter, Florida.
1995: They celebated their 74th wedding anniversary at the home of their
daughter Mrs.Ramona Stark, 172 Hampton Way, Jupiter, Florida.

Kenneth received his name from a local school teacher; Kenneth McCaskill. Ken
was raised on his family's farm in Sumter, South Carolina, this county later
became part of Lee county. Ken remembers his childhood fondly, the small farm
house with its large two sided fire place, where one could place an entire cord
of wood. The family had an iron dutch oven in the kitchen, his mom baked
cracklen corn bread and pies of the fruit trees found on their farm. Ken says
his favorite fruit pie was apple. She also baked meat and vegetable pies for
the family meals. Ken says his favorite was her chicken pie. The family raised
their own chickens: Rhode Island Reds, Pullets, Bannies (small-sized breed),
and Speckled (diamond-necked) which often layed double-yoked eggs. Their ducks
and turkeys provided eggs too. Pigs were raised for profit. The family farm
was self-suffient, growing corn and cotton as money crops. Ken's dad and older
brothers used oxen, horses, and mules to plow the fields, depending on the
season and weather conditions. They owned a tractor in later years. Ken
remembers when his mother had her new sewing machine delivered from Sears &
Robuck. Laundry was done in a hand cranked wringer washing machine, often a
local neighbor lady was hired to help with the housework. The family gathered
around an organ in the evenings to play songs and sing together. On Sundays the
family would hitch up their large Brannen horses to their buggy and attend
church. Ken and his brothers participated with local boys in contests for fun,
such as hoeing, wood cutting, and turkey-shoots. The boys usually hunted for
the local game, rabbits and squirrels for extra meat for the table. Pigeons
flew into the area only during certain times of the year but were not shot as
game. Ken and his brothers also cared for the bee hives on their farm. The boys
wore knee breeches and were referred to as "little chaps" by their mom, denoting
Brittish ancestery. His brothers had a favorite swimming hole, where only the
boy's were allowed to gather. Ken's sisters went swimming in a different area.
The young girls played games, jumped rope, and took up cooking, sewing, and the
art of needle point as their activities. Women would gather for quilt making and
arranged famiy picnics. Everyone helped with chores, milking, canning of foods,
and feed and caring of the animals. The family made homemade wine from wild
black berries and muscat grapes. Apples provided perserves of jam and jelly, as
well as delicious apple-cider drink. Staples the farm could not provide were
obtained in town from the General Store, such as cloth, shoes, and tobacco. The
town Blacksmith repaired tools and put shoes on the horses and mules. Guns were
bought from the local gunsmith. In 1924 a photo shows a large happy family. In
1914, Ken at the age of 16, lost his dad and he set up his father's tombstone
all by himself. His brothers were all married and gone from home. He tried to
hold the farm together by farming 10 acres and renting 60 acres out for income.
This lasted about three years. He left the farm and became an apprentice weaver
in the cotton mill at Columbia South Carolina. Ken next tried a job in Virginia
with Western Union, on the floating gang, working the telegraph lines. Soon Ken
joined his brothers Ed (David) and George in Jensen Beach, Florida. He hired on
at Dade Lumber Company and part-time at Gus Baths. However, at the end of the
season Ken decided to join the Army. Ken traveled to Fort Scrivens, Georgia and
enlisted with his brothers 15 May 1917, he joined in time to serve in World War
I, serving as Cpl. in the infantry at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., 1 Oct 1917. Ken
departed for Europe 12 Jan 1918 and assigned to Infantry A.C.S.D.D., 1st Corps.
April 1919 serving with American Expeditionary Force in France, Kenneth was
was awarded a "Purple Heart" for an injury received during the war. While
leading his men at dusk across a plowed field, he stepped into a ravine
and fell 75 feet to the bottom. He struck his foot on a rock and badly damaged
the legiments in his ankle. Ken was hospitalized for a week. The fighting was
very heavy in the area and this injury may have saved his life. His serial
number was #246259 during service in the army. He received a field promotion of
of 2nd Lieutenant, 29 Sep 1918 in France. Kenneth returned to the U.S. with
rank of Sgt. and discharged at Camp Jackson, South Carolina, 29 Apr 1919, rank
of 2nd Lt.
