1850: Dempsey by Occupation/Planter, lived near the families of carpenter,
Bolden Horne (45) and George McCutchon, nearby lived the John W. Horne family.
The Horne families settled in the area of Lynchburg Twp. and Mt. Cleo Twp. of
Sumter Dist/Sumter County. Sumter County was formed from Sumter District in
1865. This area was transfered to Lee County in 1902. The townships retained
their original names.
1860: Dempsey(55) is a farmer, with Estate Value $430 & $400. Dempsey has sons
James(21), Thomas(14), and "Demsey" Townsend(13) from his 1st marriage.
2nd wife Elizabeth(38)(maiden name Christmas and ex-spouse Joye) with their
daughter Sarah(9), sons Frank(5) and Merrit(1) with step-son Daniel Joy(12).
This information may need correction.
1870 census, Dempsey (Demcey) and his family are living near the family of
William Tallon (Demsey's daughter, Sarah married Wm Tallon).

to between 35 and 44 for the 1810 census, any younger would still put her in

5 Oct 1854: Dempsey Boyce, Elizabeth Boyce, Andrew J. Baker, Sarah Ann Baker,
W.M. Baker, Mary Jane Baker, convey to Thomas B. Fraser for $240, 96 acres
formerly owned by Absolem Christmas, father of Elizabeth Boyce, Sarah Ann Baker,
and Mary Jane Baker. They were living on Cowpers Swamp, Sumter Dist., S.C. at
the time.

Based on the know ages of his children, there was one male in the house (16-26)
that is un-accounted for. This family was living near the families of William
Harrison and Benjamin McFarland.
On the 1820 census, the following information was recorded for Nicholas Dalton
family:

A total of 15 people in the house, with 9 enganged in agriculture. Living
nearby were the families of Col. James Hunter, and Thomas Joyce Sr.
Hunter-Dalton Cemetery, now known and the Price Cemetery is located on #1325,
west of Mayodan, Madison Twp, on the hillside above Colonel James Hunter's
house.
Nicholas died at the age of 67 years 9 months 28 days, as stated on his
headstone. "Sacred to the Memory of NICHOLAS DALTON, who departed this life
Jan. 7, 1838, aged 67 years, 9 mo. and 28 days".
"RACHEL HUNTER departed this life Aug. 23, 1863, aged 89 years. The
last enemy that shall be destroyed is death".

If either or any of my children should become dissatisfied therewith, not to go
to law with each other but to lay their grievance before John L. Leseure and
Nathaniel Scales...Wit: Andrew Martin, Eppy Rhodes.
Nicholas was appointed Justice of the Peace soon after marriage. He held this
office most of his life, and in later years was senior Magistrate for
Rockingham County. Other members of the 'BAR' were Bartlett Yancey (1785-1828),
John Motley Morehead (1796-1866), James Turner Morehead (1799-1875), Thomas
Settle Sr. (1789-1857), David L. swain (1801-1868), Calvin Jones (1775-1846),
John Kerr (1782-1842), William A. Graham (1804-1875), and Nathaniel Boyden
(1796-1873).
Nicholas died 7 Jan 1838, age 67 years 9 months 28 days.
Nicholas' home stood on the north side of Murphy Street between Franklin and
Wall Streets in Madison.
