Beast Wars: Fox Kids Repaint Rhinox
This is one of three Fox Kids repaints I own which I purchased rather than springing
for like, three times the price, of the original versions. Of course, the repaints are
all, erm, interesting, in their choice of color scheme, but they are the same exact mold
of the originals, so I guess you can't complain.
Ahh, Rhinox. What two things define him (not his persona, mind you, but his physical
appearance and such)? Well, he's green, and those big chainguns of his. Both aren't here
in the repaint. Actually, the chainguns aren't even part of the mold. The toy Rhinox comes
with a weird rotating blade and mace weapon (and a cheesy sword) which has features similar
to his guns on the show. This would be because Mainframe adapted his spinning weapon to
be the chainguns we all know and love. The spinning piece just leaves you with an empty feeling
of 'where the hell are his guns?'.
Aside from his crappy non-chaingun, Rhinox comes with an even lamer sword which doubles
as his Rhino tail. The bad thing about the sword is, unlike the other weapon (I don't
even know what to call the thing), there's no storage for it when he's in robot mode, so
there's a tendency to lose it. Try and find a lose Rhinox on eBay (Fox Kids or otherwise)
that comes with the sword. There's very few.
Ah yes, I forgot to mention the one cool thing about his spinning weapon. You get to
put it together. The main part stores in his chest, the blade on his back, and the two
ball 'n' chains under his leg cloak dealies. Actually, if you don't connect the mace things,
you can kinda pretend that the rest of the weapon is his gun, thought it's still not
quite as satisfying.
Okay, but enough bitching about his weapons. On to the real robot. The thing about this
series of toys is the annoying ass mutant heads. I think I forgot to mention it in Dinobot's
review, but they are annoying as all hell. However, this is easily fixed as they all pop off
quite easily (except for Scorponok's and Cheetor/Tigatrons, but theirs can be hidden easily),
though Rhinox and Dinobot get some weird looking knobs left on the sides of their heads which
I was going to cut off, except I've gotten kind of used to them (plus mint toys sell for more,
and I most likely will end up selling all of these down the line, gotta plan for the future).
Either way Rhinox's face looks better without the danged things there.
Sadly, Rhinox is now a maroon red color in robot mode instead of green, so you really wouldn't
know he's Rhinox, and his rhino mode is gray, not brown. All that aside, it's pretty cool, though
slightly show-inaccurate. Seems the designers were going for more of a samurai look with all those
melee weapons and his samurai skirt thingy. Still looks quite cool though.
So, mutant head and crappy weapons aside, Rhinox is a very cool toy to own, as is the
Fox Kids version, though not quite as cool (hrm). If you can find one for a decent price
(I think I paid $10 for mine on eBay, $15 after shipping) then pick it up.
