Robots in Disguise Cryotek
The Robots in Disguise toy line is comprised completely of re-released molds. The majority
are from the Japanese series 'Car Robots' which is what RID is in Japan. However, toys from
the G2 line, Machine Wars, Beast Machines line and G1 toy line were all released under the
Robots in Disguise label (Bruticus being the Beast Machines toy). What was left but to release
a Beast Wars mold? Enter, Transmetal 2 Megatron.
Cryotek is a straight out repaint of TM2 Megs. What is red and yellow on TM2 Megs are shades
of blue on Cryotek. Aside from the color changes, everything is the same. Even the way TM2
Megatron was packaged is retained with Cryotek.
And that includes not only the permanent neck cramp he has from having his neck packaged
turned in the name of art (Cryotek too, has box art making it looks like he's breathing fire,
though his flames are more like ice), but also the upside-down plastic 'T' shaped thing on the
back of his neck. Yes, that's right, two years after the first release of TM2 Megatron which
was no doubt followed by a slew of customer complaints to Hasbro asking why their TM2 Megatron
couldn't hold a neck position like he was supposed to, Hasbro re-releases the mold again with
the same problem. Of course it's still fixed easily by taking a screwdriver to the thing
and flipping it around.
And when I say there are no mold changes, I mean it. The copyright info wasn't even updated
(it's on the inside of the dragon chest), clearly (well, maybe not clearly) it still says 1999.
Update (01/19) - Okay, I lied, there is a remold. If you have a TM2 Megs, compare the upper part of their right wings (remember, their right wings, on your left) and you'll see Cryotek's was remolded with less detail. This happened either for safty reasons (doubtful since the new wing is still kind of sharp) or because there were problems with the original TM2 Megs mold. Either way, that's about the only mold change I can see.
Anyways, there's little I can review here, as I've already reviewed TM2 Megatron, so if
you want a more extensive review I suggest you read the TM2 Megatron
review.
So then, is Cryotek worth it? Well, what held true for TM2 Megs still holds true for Cryotek,
so it really depends on weather or not you have TM2 Megatron already and how much you like the
color blue. If you don't own TM2 Megatron, then you should head over to Target as quick as possible
and pick one up (they're exclusive to Target) because the mold is a very excellent one. Otherwise,
like I said, it's all up to you.
