Beast Wars Silverbolt
Well we all know Silverbolt from the show, so how does Birdog's toy match up? Quite
well of course. After the initial wave of Beast Wars toys (the ones that were one animal
and not transmetal) Hasbro made Mainframe stop adapting characters from the toys and actually
using the toys as a base without modifying them. The result was the Fuzors and Transmetals
being exact replicas of their toy counterparts, and Silverbolt is no different.
Well, in beast mode Birdog is a wolf with wings. He has wings and a tail like a bird, but
the rest of him, minus his long front legs, are that of a wolf. Looks pretty cool actually,
and it gives off more of a stasis pod goof-up than Quickstrike does. As an added bonus if
you pull on his tail his wings move forward and he fires his missiles. Be careful with
this feature as the missiles not only fly really far, but they go off in a weird direction, and
in opposite directions to each other. Once I loaded them for the first time and pulled on his
tail I got a rude surprise of having to search for his missiles on opposite sides of the room I
was in which happened to be pretty messy (oops, forgot to clean). Just a word of warning.
Silverbolt is really solid in this mode, and very poseable as well. He can even stand on his front
legs which absolutely dwarf his hind legs. Very well detailed and very fun to play with.
Transformation is pretty cool, as his legs swap places and his head folds up into his mid-section.
Be careful with his tail as the missile firing problem is still around and no doubt they will
fly off at even weirder angles at this point.
What you get is an exact representation of Bolts in the show, he even has the same feather
firing action when you push his tail down. Ah, and he can also hold his feathers like weapons,
though his weapons aren't overly threatening. Since they're feathers they have a round look to
them, plus the bottom of them is hollowed out, and are gray on top of that, so it looks like
Birdog is going to eat all your pudding, not beat you into pudding. Still, this is overlooked
because the toy is very cool.
The only problem I have with Doggy-bot is his robot hips, which don't stay together overly
well at times. Also his beast mode hind legs (attached to his arms) are a bit of a nuisance,
but like I said, the toy is too cool to bother with annoying stuff like that. I very highly
suggest (if that even makes sense...) that you get a Silverbolt if you don't already own one,
you can usually purchase on on eBay for around $10, sometimes even less (I got mine, plus a
Quickstrike, for $10) and many are still mint on card, so yes, GET ONE!
